Default 01Z overheats and dies

So my brother got my 01 Z from me back in November. It has about 120k on it I think. Only mods is a CAI and straight piped exhaust.

It had an issue from time to time of the waterpump belt jumping off the pulley and of course the car would want to overheat.

Well my brother drove the car about 4 hours home. It DID overheat, pegging the temp, he got it home. It never smokes or steam from tailpipes at all now or anything.

However he said it will crank right up, but temps rise and it cuts off.

I am too far away and he has ZERO, well if sub zero is possible its better, mechanical abilities.

Any thoughts? I drove the car as a DD 50-60 miles a day. It ran like a champ.

Thanks in advance. I am tempted to buy her back, but scared she might not be worth it anymore.

I believe I would make the 4hr drive and see what is up with the car since your brother's skills aren't suffficient to work on the car or have a local mechanic look at it. Something is not in alignment if the belt jumps off. Did the belt jump off with him? Check the radiator for debree, Make sure the fan's are coming on, and thermostat may be stuck closed. Don't know how close U and your brother are but I would consider purchasing the car back if you can't get it fixed, with the car having 120k it will always maint., U will never go wrong doing the right thing. Think about it and listen to your conscience. U make the call. Good luck

Yeah the belt cam off with him as well. Just curious as to what it can be. He just checked today and no coolant in the oil. Wondering why it shuts off though? Does it have a shut off if temp gets too high, or does it just go to a 'limp mode'.

Not sure about the shut off but rest assured some of the other very knowledgabe guys will chime in on the cut off issue. If the belt comes off one or more than one of the several pulleys are out of alignment or the belt may be to long causing to much slop and eventually jumping off. Look down along the belt/pulley line and see if they are all in alignment and not wobbling. Does the car run fine until a certain temp is reached and then cut off or does it cut off soon after startup. How long after startup does it cut off? I have never read where a high temp automatically cut engine off but that doesn't mean anything. Is it still running hot after he put belt back on? If belt is on I would check for debree, and see if fans come on. Low speed comes on about 230 and then high speed comes soon after or if air conditioner is on they come on as soon as the compressor is on. My temp numbers may be off a little but ballpark.

If the belt comes off it is most probably a pulley alignment issue. It is common for the crankshaft damper to move or wobble and cause this issue. Look at it closely.

ok so finally talked to him some more.
IT DOES NOT...NOT. cut off. from what he describes, its just good ol limp mode. Im thinking water pump or something is shot from description of it overheating now in under a mile and water is gone. No steam or smoke from exhaust at all.

True... it may already be damaged, at least it is still running, but that kind of abuse it is going to lock up.
