I purchased my 01 Coupe new. Today I took off the MAF to remove the screen and I don't have a screen in the MAF. Car was built the last day of 2001 production, is it possible they started adding the 2002 setup to the late 01's?
My 99 is screenless - that's because I removed it. BTW my 99 responded positively when I removed the screen. Probably due to the fact that I'm running real rich.
Screens were only designed to straighten out the air entering the MAF, since the airbox, bridge and coupler go straight into the MAF, the screen is not necessary. They are necessary for Trucks using the LS1 platform because the airbox and plumbing is at different angles. If you need proof of this read the corvetteregistry's article on the differences between 01 and 02 Z06's. GM engineers decided the screen was completely unnecessary and removed it for better performance. So removing the MAF screen, I am sure is not a bad thing.
Like any mods to the engine/fuel delivery system some cars respond differently than others. Some folks out here who removed they screens reports surging, especially if your car's AFR's are already close to idea (you could lean it out causing pinging etc) other's like myself felt an immediate SOTP improvement. My AFR's fell to 10.9:1 which I'm sure you'll agree is a real RICH pig. Will be back on the WideBand Dyno this fall to check results.
So to provide a blanket yes or no answer is difficult. EVERY mod you make to your car is a crap shoot.
I think GM gets a little lax at the end of the model year build. My '98 vert which was one of the last produced was built with several '97 parts, all of which were supposed to be superseded at the START of the '98 model year build. I guess they have to search the parts bins in order to finish out the last cars on the line. Sort of like making the hot dogs and the hot dog buns come out even.
Here's the deal: 02 Z06's do not have screens, C5's do. The problem you will have if you descreen is a computer problem, (especially in the 02's). The PCM is not programed for the difference in air flow. And, the PCM does not have the ability to adjust itself enough to handle the new air flow. Thus, it is typical for surging to occur. You are better off leaving it alone.
If what this guy is saying is true, then he has completely wasted his money on the Donaldson "Blackwing" and the Granatelli Airbridge..because they allow more air before and after the MAF, if the PCM can not do anything to adjust the fuel based on more air (as he suggested) then buying an airfilter and putting on an airbridge did absolutely nothing...a little common sense..thats all (no flame!). Do yourself a favor and read what the purpose of the screen is in the Corvetteregistry's thread on the difference between 01's&02's. I have owned 2 C5's and have alway's removed the screen.

Thats very strange... are you sure? Once you remove the air bridge you should see the screen clearly.
Removing the screen- Some people have reported gains of -2 to 4hp. It may be worth a little, but not worth the risk of surging or running a little lean if you ask me. The members that have had to buy new ones b/c of the "issues" over the pursut of a couple HP would probably agree.

Very Sure, THERE IS NO SCREEN!!!!!!! I wanted to remove it, when I pulled the MAF out there was no screen in it. I do the work on the car and it struck me as odd not to have it in there. Guess it does not really matter I just wanted to know if anyone else has come across this with their cars.
