Default Replacing Valve Seals on C5

I am replacing the valve seals on a C5. Any suggestions on how to rotate the motor to get pistons to top when changing the seals. The rack and pinion is right in front of the crank and it has an ATI balance so I cannot get a socket on the crank bolt to rotate the motor.

Do you have a compressor you can just put air into the cylinders to hold the valves up? if not you can also just tap the starter with a screwdriver on the terminals and it will turn over. I just did that to torque down my pressure plate worked great and was easier for me because the headers and coil packs were off but still you should be able to do it that way if you don't have a compressor..

Can you turn the key for a sec just to get it where it needs to be and turn it like that? I didn't because I was under the car and didn't wanna get out from under a million times not sure if that's the same concept

Default turning engine on a c5

I bought a socket at Lowes that you could put a box end wrench on and it fit in and could turn the motor over. It is one of the go thru type sockets that has the outside hex with a hole in the center. I am not at my garage now but I will try and post you a part number later today.

Made my own a few years ago. Just milled some flats on a short 24mm socket and use a wrench to turn it.

Btw, I recently did a spring and seal swap on my heads and used my compressor to keep the valves up. No nned to rotate the engine using air.

I have a compression checking tool. The hose unscrews from the gauge to allow you to use it to pump up the CC. Handy.

That's also how I did mine on my original LS1 engine a few years ago. Works like a charm.

Whats the minimum air psi needed to keep the valve up? Is the amount of air needed constant? Just curious what kind of leak down the cylinder experiences.

I used 40-50 psi but that's just because I already had the air on for something else and that held the valves up no problem.

You can buy the air fitting with a valve from Summit Racing.

I kept 20 to 40 psi on mine but I still rotated the crank just in case. If you plan it out right, you can change an exhaust valve seal of one cylinder and the intake valve seal of another for a given position of the crank. You just have to think about where each piston should be in the firing order.

Default Burning Oil

Hey guys I know this might be a little off topic but I'm burning alot of oil on my 2002 c5. I pulled the spark plugs and they were covered in oil. I was thinking bad rings but I did a compression test and it was more than good. I was also thinking valve cover gaskets but then again spark plugs are above the cylinder. What do you guys think?
