Default Starting Problem Solved

I have a 2001 ZO6 with approximately 24,000 miles.

For the last two months or so, my car had not started as quickly as it did previously. No real problem, but it needed to crank over a few more times than before when cold. When hot it needed a good 2-3 seconds before starting. The engine ran fine otherwise, normal amount of power, no difference in gas mileage, etc. Changing the plugs made no difference. (NGK TR55's). Magnecor wires didn't solve the problem but added a nice smoothness -- I'm impressed!

I found that there was a fuel pressure leak, but couldn't figure out where. So off to the dealer.

They found a pressure leak of 30 psi/30 sec which was inconsistent. They isolated the left and right, and front and rear fuel tanks and determined that there was a fuel line check valve that was leaking internally. They replaced the hose and check valve. Problem solved.

Maybe this will help someone else figure out a starting problem.

Elk,

Thanks for the post. I have a 99HT with approx. 26k. The last week or so it has not been cranking as eagerly as I'm used to.

Will do plugs and wires, then decide from there.

Thanks for passing along your experience,

when you turn on the ignition switch the fuel pump runs for 2/3 seconds to prime the system, then the pump shuts down till the engine fires and the oil pressure come up. if the check valve leaks the pressure will fall off when the pump shuts off making the hard starting problem because there is no pressure to the injectors. :chevy

Clem:

This makes sense, but why would it then be harder to start when it was warm then when cold? I'd expect it to start more quickly when warm as it doesn''t need the extra fuel to fire off as it does cold.

Plus, I tried starting at different amounts of time after I turned the key to the "on" position as part of my diagnostic process and it made no difference. I tried everything from turn the key to start right away, pause at on/run for the briefest moment and start, wait a half second, -- all the way up to wait five seconds or so. No change. Most intriguing.

No argument with your comment. I just like to understand why things work as they do.

my 99 had this problem,i installed a fuel pressure gage and the pressure would come up and then fall back to zero when the pump shut off. some times my car would start the first hit other times it would require cranking for several seconds. after the fix the engine fired up as soon as you turned the key. the difference between hot and cold i would have no idea. :chevy
