If I remove my cats will I need O2 sensors for sure? I have a friend that owns a muffler shop and he fabracated some pieces to do my own A&A exhuast mod. But while I was there I was thinking of removing the cats. And just putting a pieced of pipe there. My 99 M6 Coupe has 2 cats, if I replace them with just a piece of pipe will I need the O2 sensors and what will happen if I don't use them or till I can get them? Also is there any loss of torque without the cats?
Yes ..you WILL need (2) 02 simulators...several vendors on this forum sell them. Breathless Performance sells them and the exhaust is already prefab for the install.. but ...Pull the cats! They are dead weight! :yesnod:
You don't need your O2 simulators if you have your computer reprogrammed. Obviously the O2 sims are a much cheaper alternative though. If you don't immediatly put in the sims or reprogram the computer you will throw a check engine code. It will not hurt anything, except maybe the environment. <---But that's debatable. I would just buy the sims unless you are planning on having some tuning done. Good luck.
My exhaust note only slightly got louder but I am using the RT. 66 exhaust. It sounds awesome at WOT! I would not trade it for any exhaust in the world. + the console inside and when I open the doors feels much cooler. Of course the cats build up alot of heat from the chemical reactions...
Got to do some tuning to pick up power in most cases.
we have the 02 Simms listed for 119.00 and in stock. 7hp gain is the average gain for no cats and minor mods...i personally do not think its worth the smell, the noise for the power gained. (cant believe i said that! i must be getting old!)
Check out this post in this same section: "Offroad vs Random Tech 3" high flow on big motor". Granted this is on a 436" motor but the gains were significant. The Mufflex web site shows dyno graphs on a standard C5 before and after removal of the cats. They picked up 10 rwhp/rwt across the power band. There was no loss of torque. I picked up 25/21, nowhere in the power band was there a loss. My O2 simulators cost $75.00 for the pair, Mufflex supplied them at cost. I'm still using the stock mufflers, the noise level is just about perfect.
Before you totally jump off the deep end. Two guys from our last two dyno days got no gains at all without he cats. In fact last months dyno day the one I just spoke of had some exhaust mods also and was 8 rwhp less than before. Sound was a bit throatier but that was it. I guess it's the old race line, if it don't go Chrome it.

Thanks jimman
I am mainly doing it for sound, and if it makes the car lighter and more hp, then that is a PLUS
You will need them if you take the cats off. If your car has sensors downstream of the cats, which it does, you need them. I had the MET sensors and they worked great.
