Default Newbie with 2001 Corvette

Hi everyone. OK, I've been a Ford man all my life and this is my first venture with a GM product. I just bought a 2001 Corvette today (I'll post pics later). I noticed it gives me a message of Serv.Tire.Mon.Sys. I understand it's the TPM's in the rims. I've built several street rods but this electronics is beyond my expertise. Is there anyway to program these to rid the error message? I notice on Youtube some guy used a magnet and reset them. How do I find out what is wrong without buying a whole new set. Thanks, I'll be enjoying this forum!

your local tire store can reset them for you probably for free. I just had two replaced for $40 each including dismount and mount and balance. They have a battery in them. push reset clears warning.

Wow, fantastic source of information. I didn't realize I had to be a computer tech to own a C5 Vette. All my previous cars I did most if not all the maintenance on, however I may have to resort to experts with the Vette. I am very impressed with the help here and very appreciative of the information. Hopefully, I can be of help to others in this forum in some way or another.

It is a little intimidating at first, but, you'll get the acronyms down and how all the quirks of a C5 work. Most common are weak battery voltage, grounds, and bad connectors. Don't be too scared, they really aren't that bad to work on. Welcome to the maddness.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. Some of my Blue Oval buddies made comments of "Welcome to the dark side" I know what that means on Star Wars, but not sure with Chevy's I finally got all the registration and transfer completed today, so now I can get the car on the road. I went to the Chevy dealer yesterday and they said they would check the TPM's out for free and suspect one is getting bad, giving me the error message. They told me if I wanted to replace the bad TPM, it would be around $225.00. OUCH. I probably go to a tire shop and check with them first. I'll be posting pictures when I get a chance. Pictures with your driveway as a background doesn't cut for me. Now I have to sell my 56 Ford truck so the dark side mobile can go in the garage.

You can find TPMS for a lot less then what the dealer quoted. Do a google search for Schrader TPMS...they make them for GM so it's the same damn thing. There are also vendors on the forum that can get them cheaper !

BEWARE of the Stealerships... come to the forum and LISTEN to SOUND advise. DO LOTS of searches, but use the GOOGLE search NOT the forum search, for best results... even though you use GOOGLE it will usually find a Corvette Forum link that has hit on your search, it's just more efficient.

I was told that you need to know the frequency of the TPMs before you purchase them. Is there any truth to that? If so, how do you find out what frequency your TPMS is without pulling the ones that are inside you tires?

Order by year and in your case 2001 - 2004 TPM's are the same and much less expensive than the early year (1997 - 2000) TPM's.

Default UPDATE on TPMS

Just wanted to let you guys know what I found on my error message about the serv. tires, etc. It appears the rear left (driver's side) TPM was defective. I went to America's tires where they checked it, replaced it with a new TPM and calibrated all four wheels. $50.00. No more messages and all is good. The previous owner put the balance weights on the outside of the rim, rather than inside the wheel where you don't see them. While they tire guys were at it, I had them remove all wheels, remove the weights and re-balance the tires with the weights inside the wheel $30.00. Wheels look great now and I'm happy! Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.

Who puts balance weights on the outside of a rim? Congrats on joining the Corvette club. I am a new mustang to corvette crossover myself. Joining this forum was a great step because these people will try to help you with any problem no matter how crazy, easy, or impossible. The member that suggested googling your problems was spot on. When you goggle you will either find the answer on here, LS1 forum, or one other corvette forum. If you have any newb questions send them my way if you want because i have already asked them.

Glad they got you fixed up... the TPMS is a nice feature. Have fun!

I have a 2001 and have no error messages, but the tire pressure is displayed for all but the left rear tire, any thoughts? And it must be a red 2001 thing, because the weights were installed on the outside of my rims too! Shopping for rims, so haven't addressed the weights, but wondered if I might have a bad sensor causing the left rear to not display?

I believe for a dynamic balance you must put weights on the outside where they can be seen. (Make sure they do not put them where they can hit the calipers up front.)

I own a 2001 as well, I have fixed every little issue, and most non-vette people think my car is much newer than it i. It is cosmetically in new car condition with 160,000 miles on it!

I have learned how to do most of it here on the forum. One of the other best investments I make was a set of service manuals for 2001.

When I replaced the bad TPMS on my car, I had the tire store remove the weights on my wheels which were on the outside edge of the rims. They used the tape on type wheel weight which mount on the inside of the rim. No problems with balance or TPMS readings or touching any brake parts, etc. The rims looks much better without the weights on the outside. Glad I did it.

Even though you have TPMs, buy a decent gage.

That tire could be flat, or the pickup isn't reading the TPM correctly (and it'll start displaying again), or that TPM is bad.

BTW, at statup, if the system detects low pressure in any given tire, it will throw the SvcTireMon Sys message. Hit reset to clear it, then it will display 'Low Pressure XY" where XY is which tire tire has low pressure. LF/RF/LR/LF. Repeated presses of the "guages" button will eventually bring you to the the readings for each wheel.
