Spark Plugs
Are the NGK Tr 55 gaped at .40 a good plug for a stock LS1 ?

No.
TR55 are gapped to 0.60" at factory. Re-gapping to 0.040" may damage negative electrode. Use TR5 instead, which come gapped to 0.040"
My preference is AC 41-985 iridium plugs. They're the successors to what the engine designers specified.

ANY iridium (or platinum) plug from any of the major manufacturers (including AC Delco, Bosch, Autolite, Champion, NGK, Denso, etc) would be better.

I installed TR55's last summer, they came factory gapped at .040" +/- a couple of thousandths...
