Default Radio & Install

Hi again Vette pros,
I am looking to up-grade the radio in my ride while I have the dash apart. The original is the cassette. I have looked at the CD unit but have to ask, is there a unit out there that is highly recommended that works with the A Theft system and has at least i-pod capability? If I go with the original CD unit, is it a problem installing it i.e. - MDI or Tech II required?
Thanks

P.S. What is this round connector to? It was not connected to anything when I took the plastic cover off. I attached a picture of it but am having a hard time getting it to attach even after sizing it down with photo shop. If you can't see it let me know and I will send it by itself
Thanks

The connector goes to the cig lighter.

If you want to go simple, you can go with the OE CD and the aftermarket iPod adapter that's available.

If you don't mind some work, run new speaker wires and go with a new deck all together.

If I use the stock deck will I have to program the system or will it work straight away?
Any suggestions as to what is a popular replacement for the stock unit?
Thanks for the advice

Your going to a lot of work to just put another crappy GM head unit back in your car... but, there is NOT a replacement aftermarket that fits the 1.5 DIN hole in your bezel... you will need an install kit for a single DIN or Modify your bezel for a Double DIN...
Almost ALL of the aftermarket head units are good quality compared to the GM... Sony, Clarion, Kenwood, Pioneer... the list goes on...depends on how much you want to spend...
If you have the resources I'd put in a whole system... Head Unit, Amp, Speakers, and Sub... and LOTS of sound deadening....
Not sure about plug and play on the CD version of the STOCK unit... you might try to find one that you can just plug in and try it to see if it will work...before putting it all back together.

If you use a stock replacement, you will have to unlock it once you install it. Your owner's manual has instructions or someone on here can offer them to you. I don't know personally as my car already had an aftermarket system in it when I bought it.
