Default Ring Replacement - What to expect, did it hurt or help performance?

Well, I finally took my vette into the dealership (Huffines, Plano) for some warranty work, stripped headlight gear. While it's there, they're also going to look into the oil consumption issue. They're going to let Keith take a look at it and they may wind up doing the ring replacement.

If it comes to that, what should I expect performance wise? No change, some improvement? I presume (hope) that it didn't cause any performance loss on anyone's car. Yes, no maybe?

Also, what is the likelyhood that they'll reflash the pcm and blow away Speedwork's LS1 Edit tuning while it's there?

Although I had my '95 in often, this is the first time I've handed my '01 over to them and I'm already biting my nails.

Thanks.

Mine is going in tomorrow. After 1000 miles I have no oil on my dip stick. That worries me!!! I'll post my results also.

If I was you I'd make friends with the mechanic and get him to slip in some C&A or Total Seal gapless rings. No leakdown = more power. You shouldn't lose any power no matter what you do. I wouldn't think he would reflash the PCM, there should be no need to.

Everett -- mine goes in today or tomorrow, same dealer, for the rings. I've got my fingers crossed.

Had my rings replaced back in November. I did not notice any difference in performance and they did not have to reflash my PCM. All I know is that my oil consumption decreased dramatically.

Had mine done in March. No performance change, but oil consumption at a more acceptable level. I haven't topped it off since the re-ring about 3300 miles ago. It's now down about 3/4 quart.
There is no reason for them to reflash your PCM for this.

Steve:

Did the breather mod you made help with consumption at all? It didn't seem to help me any but it may have had a hand in improving (eliminating) the pinging I was getting at WOT.

I talked to the dealer today, and they topped the oil off and are going to watch it before they decide to do the replacement. That's fine with me, I'm not in a real big hurry to have them tear into the engine.

Hope yours goes well.

I "felt" the PCV mod reduced some consumption, and indeed I think there's no question at all that without it a considerable amount of liquid oil was making it to the intake via the PCV hose. This said, however, I also think my car was quick to consume oil via some other route at higher RPMs, and presumably that other route is the rings.

I can't really provide much of a scientific answer because I never endeavored to drive a certain amount of miles within a certain RPM range and then test the consumption, and then repeat at other RPMs and so forth. But, my gut tells me the PCV mod reduced both the consumption and the pinging, but in the long run, the improvement still was not enough to avoid the ring job. Also, in the long run, I can't help but think that consuming oil is not a good thing for the engine, so I'm hoping that the risk I'm taking by letting them tear into it is outweighed by the benefit of longterm reduced consumption, particularly since I plan to keep this car for at least 60k miles.
