Default Coupe vs Hard Top Windshield Cost

Just looked up a quote from Safelite for a windshield replacement. They quote $687 for a coupe w/o heads up display and $198 for a hard top (z06) w/o heads up display. Is that huge price difference because the z06 windshield is thinner for weight savings? I have a coupe, can't I just get the hard top windshield and save money and weight?

Do you have the concealed antenna in the windshield? Could be the difference in price.

Hmm, true. I haven't looked though so I'm not sure. That would make sense

FYI, the "Hardtop" windshield is different than the "Z06" windshield. Only the Z06 windshield was thinner.

Hardtop = 1999 - 2000
Z06 = 2001 - 2004

They just list either coupe or hard top. The only hard top in 2002 was the z06so I'm just assuming they probably use the same windshield for 99-04 hardtops.

I'm not sure what the aftermarket glass suppliers are doing these days as far as application listings, etc, so check around.

Btw, there WAS no "hardtop" in '97 - '98.

Neither the hardtops (nor the convertibles) had windshield antennas, as they both used external fender-mount antennas, with the convertible being a power unit.

There is a difference between the coupe and hardtop. The Z06 only comes as a Hardtop. Here is detailed photos of a windshield replacement on a 2001 Z06. If you have any other questions let me know.

Keeping track of all the different C5 windshield glass types and/or part numbers can get really confusing. I think the aftermarket glass folks have tried to consolidate as best they can.

FYI, the "Hardtop" was an actual GM C5 Corvette standalone model name and was manufactured in 1999 and 2000. IOW, in 1999 and 2000 there was the Sport Coupe, Hardtop, and Convertible, with the HT and Conv sharing the same glass (either HUD or non-HUD)
Beginning in 2001 with the Z06 model introduction, the "Hardtop" was discontinued as a separate model name, and to compound things, the new "Z06" received the thinner glass specified by GM, and the Convertible no longer shared glass with either of the other C5s.

Then you throw in HUD/Non-HUD versions of these windshields, and the issue can get REALLY confusing.

ALL C5 Z06s are "hardtops", but NOT all Hardtops are Z06s.

My understanding is the HUD windshield is different for light reflection properties. My parts info does show that a HUD windshield is a different P/N. I would think if a manufacturer truly did make one to OEM specs that would increase the price.

Can you comment of this? The Z06 may have had two types of windshields based on RPOs. I can't tell from my parts info if the Z06 had two types or not.

The HUD glass does have a slight difference in the projector area, and is more expensive, but in real world practical terms, the non-HUD glass works well also. At least in the gazillion windshield glass threads posted on CF over the years, not to mention my own personal car.

Correct. the windshield with HUD is a different part number. The difference is on the windshield with HUD there is a translucent flim that reflects the projection allowing for a crisp display. If a non HUD windshield is installed the display will look fuzzy and hard to read

Incorrect. While this MAY occur, it did not on my windshield, nor many many others here over the years who have replaced HUD windshields with non-HUD glass and who have posted their results on this topic.

What is the part number they are giving you?? NOT a factory part number, the NAGS (National Auto Glass Society) part number? I can tell you which part you need. It'll start with DW and then a four digit number.

Okay, I just checked the pn and pricing.....don't use Safelite. Their glass (yes, they manufacture their own glass) sucks.
Coupe w/s's are actually cheaper than the Z06. FRC's are cheaper than either AND it comes with the molding already encapsulated.
What year is your car??

I'm aware of the frc and z06 and the differences. Safelite doesnt list the z06 so they list all the hard tops together. This means z06 owners probably won't get the lighter windshield from Safelite.

So in reality there's a total of 4 options from Safelite, coupe or hardtop, HUD and non-hud.

And once again, the convertible guys are left out in the cold!

Hell, what red88 is true, they really DO suck and for more reasons than one.

I just looked up Safelite since they're pretty popular and they're mobile but since my insurance deductible is only $150 I'll go wherever I get the best quality and correct glass.
