Classic fuel gauge problem without a fix. need help
Hi I just got this 2002 z06 2 months ago. I have used techron additive , replaced left and right fuel tank senders , car has the latest software update and still fuel gauge is not properly working. I can fill up the tank but the the gauge never shows over 60 percent. It gives me P1431 code which is for the right tank but I already replaced the right sensor i have taken it to few shops and nobody could figure out. Any idea ? Maybe a wiring short somewhere? Thanks
Hi
It's a pain draining the tank eh . Would have been good to test the float arm out of the tank just so you know it has full sweep , and check gauge at the same time.
Maybe check harness as much as you can , might have high resistance somewhere due to heat , over axle exhaust area .
Check the grounds , connector to pump .
If you run it near to empty as you can , fill it up to max and see how much fuel you actually put in , then compare with tank capacity .
Maybe keep an eye out for a cheap instrument cluster might be something in there gone bad.
Thank you. It takes over 16 galoons so no problem there and cluster works fine too. Might be a short at wires but its probably pia to locate it and nobody wants to deal with it. Stealership said leave the car for few days... im trying to see If anyone had the same problem before since I checked the whole forum and couldnt find an answer
Same thing happened to my 2001 ZO6. When the stealership replaced the right tank sender (under warranty when the car was 1 year old), they bent the float arm causing the float to jamb against the side of the fuel tank.
So I removed the float & straightened it, no issues since.

I am very interested in how you determined the fuel gauge in the IPC is "fine".
I could postulate that they put in the early sender with the 4 pins and not the one for your car with 3 pins.
Both have a 4 cavity connector and it would plug right up.
Looking at the connector view of each what you would have is a resistor in the circuit and the level sensing potentiometer would be out of it. That would explain the P1431 code.
I would unplug the connector and see if the sender has 4 or 3 pins.

Fuel Senders
Were you experiencing fuel gauge issues as soon as you purchased the car, and that's what necessitated the sending unit change? Did the gauge function properly (at all) after the sending unit installation?
I am having the same issue with my '98. BOTH sending units replaced within the last 18 months. I performed the work, but did not pay attention to the number of plugs (3 or 4). My gauge worked perfectly up until a month ago. The car was parked for a couple of months (not a DD) The Corvette shop has hooked up a "computer" and tried to manually "drive" the fuel gauge to 100%. It only goes to 60%. Previously, if I filled the tanks, the gauge WAS going to 100%, but apparently not now. The shop is going to semi-install a different cluster to see if the fuel gauge is the culprit. I will update with the findings.
