Default Headers, Long Vs. Short

Time to open up the worm can again...

Is the cost of long tubes really worth it? I've been an advocate of long tubes for a long time, but I've heard calims that the newest B&B shorties are just as good. Thoughts? Comparissions?

Claims from who? Did they include before and after dyno graphs?

Long tubes will give you a better torque curve.

From what I've seen, the shorties cost the same or more than some of the long tubes. So I haven't really given shorties much thought. The (only?) advantage of shorties is that they bolt up in place of the OEM manifolds so they should be easier to install. I'm planning to go with long tube headers when my mod budget will allow it.

Shortie headers are simply more efficient version of exhaust manifolds. expect 5-7 HP and/or Tq

Long tube headers are both more efficient versions of exhaust manifolds, but MOR IMPORTANTLY, these headers extract latent energy from the high pressure exhaust pulse and utilize this energy to inhale more mixture. More mixture in->more power out, bigger exhaust pulse->more mixture in. expect 15-25 HP and Tq.

i agree with everyone else on the performance of long tubes, however, one thing you need to consider is the year of your car. if you have a 2001 or newer coupe or convertible you will be breaking the law by installing long tubes. no the cops are going to show up at your door but you can't legally tamper with the emissions equipment and replacement with non oem equipment till 50k, i think. which is why some people prefer shorties in those situations. i also forgot 2001 Z06's, and all california emission car would fall under this. the reason is because with long tubes the pre-cats are eliminated on these models. all 2002 and up Z06's don't have them to my knowledge...
