C5 Cam questions...

IF,,,, I told you I have a Whiplash Cam from England Green Performance,, What would that mean to you> Unless you knew the specs for that cam, It wouldn't mean much. So, please list the Street heat stage 2 specs
Cams have a POWER range. The RPM where they start making power.. If you select a cam that ,makes all of its power from 4000 - 7500 RPM ,, You better be driving a race prepped car on the track or strip.
Try to select a cam that has fantastic power in the MID Power Range. They are easier to tune and easier to drive. You also have to ask your self,,,, What are ALL of my goals for a cam swap?
Some of those questions should be:
- Budget
- HP TQ expectations
- Reliability
- Primary use of the car and powertrain
YOU STATED : " I love getting 28 mpg on trips, just curious how it's affected. How does this cam do with the 3.42 gears staying in the car? Any bucking? Surging? Stalling? "Sewing machine noise"? I had a ms4 cammed 02 camaro before this, and it pulled like crazy, but it was so poorly mannered, I really didn't enjoy driving it. I'm ok with a choppy idle, just don't want it surging and stalling on me in traffic. "
My WHIPLASH CAM is pretty close to the street sweeper cam. So, I know what you mean.. I like the high RPM power but, it all up high in the rpm range
Once you add cam and headers, there are things that will need attention:
Clutch
TT Couplers
Traction
Suspension
I can get 26-27 MPG at 450 RWHP on the highway and shes a BEAST when you hammer it!!
I upgraded to a SPEC DUAL DISK clutch, up graded differential, wider tires and rims and better shocks and a who;e bunch of reliability stuff.BC
231/235 | .63x”/.61x” | LSA113+3
Basic Operating RPM Range: *2000-6600
Your mileage is incredible for the power you're making. My camaro gulped fuel, but I blame that on the 4.11 gears more than the cam I was using.
On a manual trans you can get away with a larger cam without sacrificing any drivability-- The cam you chose seems to be right in line however I would still go somewhat larger like in the high 230's maybe a .235/239---
Surging and drivability issues are simple a result of poor tuning---I have tuned much larger cams on a manual trans with no issues and even some on A4's with a stall converter
As far as mileage goes It really does not change that much as mentioned---maybe 1-2 MPG less--- My 98 A4 even with 3.42 gears and a high .220's cam (.228) still got 27 MPG and never had any drivability problems---A M6 is much more forgiving
I would also on a manual trans get a LSA of 112--rather than a 113 +3--It will sound and lope awesomely --and will make incredible top end HP and TQ
