Took my car in for a quick service today and as he was finishing up the mechanic was inspecting my car an notice one of the weldments between the two cats had broken off. I had mentioned rattling to him earlier and I thought it was the belts but it finally turned out to be this irritating broken weldment. Life is much quieter and less embarrassing. :D :D :D
Just for other folks it sounded exactly like the marbles thing or a loose belt coming from the engine so I would just take a look. I thought it was much more than a broken weldment but was wrong and never bothered to check.
(97C5 BTW-he also mentioned they stopped welding the cats together after 2002)
Some pictures would help the rest of us know where to look
First, you probably need to get the car on a lift. There is a flat piece of metal that runs between the two cats (on top, near the front). It tends to fracture near the middle of the piece. Most of the time you will need to drop the intermediate pipe to see it. If you do drop the pipe, be sure to disconnect the O2 sensors first.
