Hello all, Im probably going to be buying a C-5 since I just got my C-4 sold and my C-3 might be sold. I have a question though. Is the A4 much slower than the M6? 1/4 mile times for example. Is there much difference in the times? Can the difference be made up easily with a t/c and gears?
Please, and advice is appreciated.
Well the A4 comes with 2.73 gears which are a DOG!!! Unless you get the G92 perf axle ratio which gives you 3.15s which are quite nice. But stock the M6 comes with 3.42s and head to head the A4 has no chance, particularly with the 2.73s. If you don't mind driving the M6 in traffic and whatnot then get the M6. If you get the A4 and you do gears and TC it will run you around 2K, put that into an M6 and you can get some nice engine work done and be much faster.
comparing bone stock M6 for bone stock A4 with 3.15 gears, taking the driver equation out. The M6 will edge out the A4 due to the simple fact that it puts a little more power to the ground due to less parasitic loss.
From a roll on the highway or something, the M6 has the obvious advantage. stock for stock.
Adding a torque converter and gears to an A4 is a huge difference.

The both have there place ..I agree with kewlbrz

Re: A4 vs M6 (RHILL)
If you want an A4, get it and then throw in 3.42s and a nice converter and you should be just as fast or faster then 6 speeds. So get which one you want, not which one will be faster.
One thing to consider is the reliability factor. If you change the torque converter you would probably want to add a tranny cooler. Also, if you are going to pump up the motor with a H/C package or S/C you need to be aware that the A4 will probably not be able to deal with the added torque for long and a beefed up tranny will be in order.

Thanks for that info. I did not know that. I would like to put a h/c package on in the future, so it looks like an M6.
If you like shifting gears, buy an MN6. If not, buy an automatic. The MN6 is definitely faster if you are halfway good at shifting. How much, I'll take a stab at it. Anyone with a fairly stock A4 please tell me if I'm off too much.
MN6 - high 12's at 110 - 111
A4 Low 13's at 106 - 107
I've raced A4 cars from highway speeds. As you go faster, the MN6 really leaves the A4 behind. From a dead stop the A4 will probably hang with it until about 60mph (with the G92 gears).
I just traded my A4 for a six speed, I was going to install a tc and gears, shift kit, reprogram, and tranny cooler. I really like to row through the gears, and decided that with all of the reliability issues with souped up A4s that I would just switch to a six speed. Keep in mind that the A4 with those mods will smoke a six speed in the quarter, but if you put that 2000$ into the six speed it would be faster. Just get what you like to drive most, dont buy based on what you think will be faster, there all fast
If both are bone stock the M6 will win with a good driver in some cases. However the "Bandit" with an A4 has run a best of 12.57 @ 111 with the stock converter and 3.15s engine internally stock, Mikie C has run 12.0s with his A4 with a Yank 3000 and 3.15s with an internally stock engine. These performances would be very hard to match with an internally stock M6. The bottomline is drive an M6 and a A4 and buy the one you like best.

Another thing to consider is, evnetually, most enthusiats get into some kind of track days. The A4 will get hot and start setting off the alarm pretty quickly on a rodcourse. So you either have to add a cooler or limit your time on the track.
On my "almost" bone stock 2002 A4 with 400 miles on odomater (a K/N conical filter the only mod, run flats) in perfect weather (-260 ft. air density altitude in Feb. of this year), I ran one 12.73 and two 12.8's @ 107-109 mph.

Here seems to be a great comparison. My car (MN6) is set up about the same (Vortex cold air and PRT"s). In almost perfect weather in Houston (60 degrees) I made three runs in the 12.6's at high 111's mph (111.9 best).
I've had both. I recently switched to the A4 for a couple of reasons:
1. traffic congestion
2. I could not shift the C5 MN6 agressively without problems, mainly downshifts. I had an LT4 that showed no signs of the notchiness the C5 has. I've heard this from several MN6 owners. I consider myself a good driver, having SCCA raced at Summit Point and XCrossed on numerous occasions with everything from a 4-speed '58 Vette to an XCross-prepared '72. The LT4 was sweet. The C5 MN6 too sloppy. Just my $.02.
I think your choice should be based on whether or not you enjoy shifting or not and forget about all the rest of the questions. Money will make any C5 faster.
