Default Remove battery

I'm putting my 98 in winter storage, and I wonder if it's ok to remove the battery? As a former Mercedes owner, I know that on those cars you get all sorts of problems if you remove the battery. How is it for the C5?

Not at all... many that store their C5 in the Eastern US pull out their batteries during storage.

Default winter storage

I would buy a battery tender instead, that way you can start the car once in a while, engines need to be started and run during winter storage if possible. My 2 cents.

I store mine with the battery removed and in the spring the only thing I have to do is re-sync the key fob and re enter the radio presets and I'm good to go.

Buying a battery tender is a very good option to pulling the battery out of the car during winter storage, but you do not need to start the car when it in stored for just a few months. In fact, unless the car is brought up to temp and driven for a number of miles, starting the car can be detrimental in the long run. Just be sure to fill the tank with gas and add a bottle of Sta-Bil to it before filling to help preserve the gas. I would also change the oil and filter prior to storage.

If you decide to pull the battery out, just remember that if you have the radio theft lock set, be sure you know the four digit code to unlock it once you hook the battery back up. And you may have to reprogram some things (like radio presets).

I disconnect mine for the winter. No resetting anything aside from the clock when it's hooked back up in the spring.

The OWNERS MANUAL states that you SHOULD remove the battery if the vehicle is stored for an extended period of time. You have GM on your side.

It will NOT hurt a thing!!

Just store the battery in a cool dry place off the floor and charge it once a month or so to prevent the battery from going dead from internal resistance draining it as it sits idle.

The battery can certainly be removed from the car and brought inside. A battery tender such as a CTEK Model 3.8 would work for you as this is an "international" charger and operates on 220-230v and 50-60Hz.

I would also store the car with a full tank of gas and use a gas stabilizer such as Sta-Bil or similar product. If the winter weather will have a lot of moisture in the air, consider placing some dessicant pouches in the car. That could prevent mold or mildew from forming inside the car in an unheated storage space.

When I said to start and run the car, I should have said to operating temperature, but hey I live in the Southwest and don't have to store my car over the winter months, I can't imagine not being able to drive my C5 all year long. The cooler air temp's really increase the performance of my car since it has an A&A supercharger.
