Another Monster LT1-S Installed
About 200 miles on it so far, really love it. Running it with a ¾” Tilton master cylinder (Tick kit with smaller ¾” bore master). Have done a couple high rpm shifts and it’s super smooth and fast. Normal driving….it feels like a stock clutch, which I really like. Light/stock pedal effort, slightly smaller engagement window, but nothing bad at all. Makes a little noise at idle, but really nothing you’d notice without listening for it….and I’m sure some of that noise is the torque tube itself spinning around.
At ~435whp I was getting sticky clutch syndrome that I was not able to cure by any other means. This clutch solved that and more.
Also want to give a shout-out to Steve and the guys @ Monster clutch. I bought this thing second-hand (but brand new, never installed). They were very helpful all the times I called to answer any questions and make sure I had everything I needed before digging into the project. I also had some install issues (noted below) and they were very responsive in offering advice and giving tips. Never was there a time where I felt like they were rushed to get me off the phone or anything like that.
So onto my issues: I got everything together and instantly had an issue where the clutch would not disengage. After lots of master cylinder swapping, bleeding and a bunch of other random stuff, finally found the issue. The machine shop had welded some weight onto the flywheel in the balancing process….well it turns out they put it in a very bad spot and it was restricting movement and was not allowing one side of the clutch to disengage. With the inspection plate removed, I carefully cut/ground down enough of the metal to allow proper movement. That fixed the issue 100% and kept me from pulling everything back apart again. I was kicking myself for not catching it myself, but live and learn I guess… I feel like I really dodged a bullet on this one either way. Takeaway is- double check your machine shop’s work- that seems to be a trend with these things.
Here's the culprit, pre grinding:
