Default Help troubleshooting wiper problems

Just picked up a bone stock 63k mile 2001 Coupe.

I searched and found quite a few threads for wiper issues, I cleaned out the 3 left and 1 right big udder. 1 of 3 left had some debris in there, the right one was totalled clogged looked like mouse nest....I made sure water now flows out and not leaking into wires or wiper motor.

Have not driven in rain since cleaning out the udders.

Issue is during rain in my wipers were periodically stopping in the up position, then stopping completed for minutes. No response from the stalk in any position but the wash button would always work. Then they would start working again in a few minutes no problem.

Any thoughts on how to 100% fix? Should I get a new wiper motor or stalk?

Thanks!

When the problem occurred 2x this past week while raining - turning stalk to any position, combination would not fix it. Appeared totally dead stuck in the up position both times. However the washer button would still work each time while experiencing the issue. Did not have a chance to restart car was on the highway. After a few minutes they restarted on there own if left in on position.

Wipers appear to work in the dry although have not attempted for long periods.

After searching posts I just cleaned out the udders yesterday both sides but did not particularly see any water although right udder totally clogged, 1 of 3 on left side had debris in there.

Did not take out wiper motor just vaccummed and blew out the area on both sides.

Have not driven it yet in the rain again since udder cleaning....any further advise would be appreciated!

Since it appears to be a trouble area hoping past experience here may pinpoint motor, stalk, computer, etc..from symptoms noted.

Thanks.

This morning pouring rain, during a hour drive wipers fine for first half hour, then would stop in any position for a few minutes, then start functioning normally for maybe 5 minutes, then repeats issue.

The wash function continues to work during the issue so wondering if that points to good stalk and bad wiper motor.

To troubleshoot the relatively inexpensive wiper motor appears to need removal so was think just swap out the wiper motor.

I realize I am breaking the just throw parts rule but figure it might be quicker at least for the wiper motor?

If it is electrical or stalk that would be a little more difficult / may need a shop......

parking in odd/wrong position could be a worn or bent parking pawl.

The wiper motor has a breaker in it that keeps the motor from burning out when there is high resistance on the windshield, such as snow. Either something is binding with the motor or mechanism or the wiper motor is just worn out. Replacement is easiest if everything else is good.

The fact that the washer function works would have nothing to do with the wiper motor circuits.

Personally I think your stalk is probably OK and the motor control board is the issue.

Here is a good DIY that may help.

Great thanks I printed that one out.

I just swapped out the wiper motor last night, it does function but only time will tell if the intermittent problem is gone. $55 autozone remanu so figured worth a shot. One in there looks life a remanufactured one pretty beat up but did not open.

Last night on the way home before swap (2 days of rain) the wipers stop responding for the last 30 minutes of the drive - in the past would come back on after a few minutes so since they are working with new motor hopefully a good sign!

Hope that fixes it. Have not heard good things about some of those reman units. One guy had an issue later and opened it up and it was full of dirt and crap. At $55 not a big loss if it goes belly up.

Update - 1st day of rain and appears the autozone wiper motor is good, no problem with wiping during an hour drive.

The autozone swap looks better the the remanufactured one that was in in there, was dented, connection looked a little crusty, did not open the board.

One issue probably my fault - the intermittent setting stops in the upright position between sweeps, when the old motor died it was in the upright position.

New one will park down, just pauses in the up position...any tips on correcting, do I need to remove, or maybe loosen the shaft and push the transmission arms?

Thanks.

Default Wiper Motor Removal Procedures
I had to replace my wiper motor, and thought I’d post my procedures. I’ll post up the pictures tonight. The whole process wasn’t very hard, but the wiper arms were a real bear to get off the arm studs.

Tools Needed:
Click the image to open in full size.
Hammer
Needle Nose Pliers
Small Common Screwdriver
Regular Common Screwdriver
T20 Torx
T30 Torx
Small Puller (I used a battery terminal puller)
Ratchet
Socket (10 MM Metric)
Socket (1/2 SAE)
5 inch extension

Parts Needed:
Wiper Motor

Removal
1. Remove 25 amp windshield wiper fuse (fuse 10) in the passenger’s side fuse box.

2. Disconnect the windshield washer hoses from the wiper arms.
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

3. Remove screen tray connectors by prying the center the center section of the connector with a small screwdriver; this center section spreads the connector feet keeping the connector locked in. Take needle nose pliers and remove the outer casing.
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

4. Use a small screwdriver and remove windshield wiper arm nut caps. Use caution not to mar the wiper blade finish. The nut is very tight, penetrating oil sprayed onto the connecting nut will facilitate the nut removal. Remove the ½ nut underneath the cover.
Click the image to open in full size.

5. Remove the wiper arm by using small puller, to press the wiper stud and pull up the wiper arm.
Click the image to open in full size.

6. Carefully pull the wiper valley cover tray away from the windshield, start by pulling the corners free, where there is very little clearance between the windshield and the top corner of the fenders. Work from the corners to the center section.
Click the image to open in full size.

7. Flip the cover over and rest on top of engine, be careful not to break the washer hose etc. This will expose the wiper transmission linkage, and the wiper motor attached to the linkage in the drivers corner of the wiper valley.
Click the image to open in full size.

8. Remove the two 10 MM wiper transmission bolts on driver’s side.
Click the image to open in full size.

9. Remove the 10 MM wiper transmission bolt on passenger side.
Click the image to open in full size.

10. Remove the T30 Torx screw and lift the motor arm that connects the wiper transmission to the top of the motor.
Click the image to open in full size.

11. Remove the three T30 Torx screws that hold the motor to the wiper transmission.
Click the image to open in full size.

12. Carefully work the transmission free to expose the wiper motor, and move away from wiper valley. Use care not to damage the transmission arms during removal or storage.
Click the image to open in full size.

13. Take wiper motor out of valley and turn the motor over, use a small common screwdriver to depress the locking catch, and remove the electrical plug from the motor.
Click the image to open in full size.

14. Clean any debris out of the three rubber drain channels (udders).
Click the image to open in full size.

15. Remove T20 Torx screw, and separate the wiper motor plate and rubber shield from the wiper motor.

Great job and damn well documented .

Did you modified the outlet of the three udders? Imo they are miserable constructed.
My wiper motor was awash and I found the three rubber drain channels (udders) blocked with mud and leaves. The lower port of the udders are miserable constructed.
I enlarged the outlet yesterday. Now the water and dirt will be will be sluiced down.

Excellent write-up!!! I had to stumble through this last year, and this would have been very helpful!! Turned out the cam on top was not installed correctly and my wiper motor was actually good! So pay attention to how the cam is oreinted before you remove it...

FYI I believe the closed end design on the udders is to keep rodents out of the blower motor/cabin...

Are your wipers in the wrong spot when they are in the park position (when delay is on)? Cam on the wiper motor is out of position. Mine is the same way. It will be my spring fix.

I don't think they go to the park position, they just cycle and slam against the stops. They wont go to the park position no mater where I put the wipers. Another funny thing is when the delay is on, they pause in the middle of their travel for a second then start moving again

Taking the motor out looks straight forward, but how do you re-attach the drive linkage so that the wipers stop in the right place? I think I saw a post somewhere on how to synchronize the cam. It would be good to get that information together with this so people have the complete job.

Hi robsc501 -

You should easily be able to get those at your dealer - probably in stock and probably overpriced.

I would add to this nice write up, that there is one of the plastic pop-fasteners that is different than the other four - it is located right at the passenger side hump molded into the cowl cover.

Also, I was able to just soak the wiper arm bolts with PBlaster and then firmly grasp each arm and wiggle it up and off - protect the paint of the fender on the drivers side for safety.

Finally, try to get your hands under the cowl and push up on the pop-fasteners while squeezing them underneath to get them up and out of the holes.

best regards -

As far as I know,,,there there to allow water OUT and to keep things from getting in. From my expierence,,,, things (mice) can get in even if the utters are in place. Yes, you can yank them. That doesnt mean that the holes they leave still cant get clogged. Check them every once in a while!!

I would not take them out especially the 4th one on the battery side - they direct the water down. What I did was snip the bottom off about 1 inch so that they don't clog easy.

BTW since I replaced my motor the delay is in the "up" position, can't figure it out from the pics. They park fine when off. Just glad they are working after the remanu autozone one only lasted a day. So far so good with the brand new autozone one....
