Default A/C button/light

New owner of a 2004 base here. What is the normal behavior for the A/C? I'm getting the A/C button/light coming on when I use the heater (and I can hear the compressor). On the "fresh air" setting I can sometimes turn it off, but on "recirculate" it only blinks for a bit and then stays lit. Is this normal? Seems wasteful when I don't actually want the A/C to run.

Thanks!

On defrost for front window? If so, A/C comes on for that...

It is normal. Any time the temp outside is above 40F it will activate automatically. It is to control the humidity in the car.

No, just air on footwell.

Footwell only on and AC automatically turns on? Hmmm that one stumps me a bit. Pretty sure only my windshield vent forces the AC to come on (to control the humidity on the inside of the windshield as previously noted), regardless of outside temps. Will check on the way home if it turns on my AC as it will thankfully still be above 40F. Go away hints of winter coming...
Many think AC equates to cold air; not necessarily. AC simply = air conditioning (temperature and humidity control).

The HVAC System DEFAULTS to Defrost if you lose power.

I recommend that you reprogram your MEMORY Setting to some setting other than the DEFAULT

i.e. Set the HVAC up so that its in the mode and temp setting that you desire. (Something that does not require the AC to engage.)

Defrost Mode turns on the compressor as a default function. !

Press MEMORY-1 & or MEMORY-2 when you have all the things that memory remembers set to where you want them. A Short list= Radio station, volume, outside mirror positions, seat position Tilt/telescopic setting, HUD display screen, HVAC Mode and temp, fan speed, ect..

When you use your FOB, it will trigger one of the memories

OH,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, All of this is in the OWNERS MANUAL. :-)

Drivers door, furthest forward 2 buttons. Memory 1 and 2 (corresponds with #1 & 2 FOB's). Set everything the way you like it to be when you enter your car daily. If you are FOB #1, press and hold the #1 button until it flashes. Done. Rinse and repeat for FOB #2 if you like.

Will have to take a pic, but like I said, I have no memory buttons. My furthest forward buttons are the mirror buttons.

When the auto function for the climate control is turned on the ac will turn on for climate control. If you use the mode button to change the settings to upper and lower vents the ac will only come on if you turn it on. This is how my 04 works.

OK, here we go. Made a video:

It looks like the recirc functions without AC on top-only and top+bottom modes, but not bottom-only (I understand that defrost modes are AC-on). When on bottom-only, it kicks in the AC. Is that normal behavior?

That is normal. My 04 does the same thing. I only use recirc. when it is really hot out to cool it off sooner.
