Can not figure it out
... was it not making any noise with a broken pushrod?... any pics of the aftermath?

The reason I asked about the rocker sitting square on the valve is that perch saddel can wear and cause the rocker to sit crooked on the valve.
Unless that was a defective pushrod, something caused it to break. You didnt mechanically over rev it did ya????

When you over rev the engine, sometimes the valves KISS the pistons. If the push rods just bend, you could be OK If the valves are very slightly bent, you could be loosing compression.
If you over reved the engine due to a shift into SECOND when you intended to go into FORTH, You need a better shifter and the correct shift technique,, Fingers and palms!!

I saw this HINSON shifter video the other day and whoever is shifting,,, DOES IT CORRECTLY!

NOTE!!! The Aftermarket Shifter has a LOT to do with a good proper shift. Its a SPRING ASSISTED to center shifter.
The Proper HAND usage on the shifter is IMPORTANT ALSO. If you use the DEATH GRIP on the shift ****, you have the tendency to pronate and pull the stick toward your body. In the heat of the moment, you grab SECOND GEAR when you really wanted FOURTH GEAR. That mechanically runs the engine well in to the 8000+ RPM range and the valves float and touch the pistons.
I installed a Kirban shifter just to help prevent that possibility!
