That is the proper tool. Make sure each cylinder is at TDC when you do it

Tried using a spring compressor tool like you suggested in post 1 and it was complete junk. Spent an hour and was only able to remove 2 springs. Got an ls1 valve spring compressor tool on ebay, worked great had all the springs off in 30 minutes or so.

Great timing for this thread- I'm about to embark on a heads/cam project and will be swapping out the valve springs. At $75-85ish, any comments on that vs the Crane 994721 unit for twice?

I strongly suggest the Crane or Comp Cams tool (they are almost identical). They are well-designed and built to handle the stress. A buddy of mine tried a Crane look-alike and the main screw bent when he tightened it down. I lent him my Crane tool and it was no problem. I've used it on my C5 as well and it is strong and effective.

Do not use that tool, especially if you have aftermarket springs. A small scratch in an aftermarket spring will reduce its life, possibly by a great amount. That's why many are similar to the Crane design, they don't physically contact the spring itself.

I have the Crane, great tool well worth the extra cost.
