Default Strange Noises Coming From Under Dash

Car: 1999 Corvette Convertible/ Manual Trans. When I turn the key on, the display lights up as normal and then a creaking noise can be heard coming from under the dash (center) from the ventilation/defrost vents. That's where the noise seems to be coming from.It sounds like a valve opening and closing or gears with the accompanying creaking sound (like a rusty door hinge. It recycles, over and over again creaking and groaning with a distinct pattern lasting 20-30 seconds and then it starts over again. As long as the key is turned on or the engine is running it makes this weird noise. It started a week or so ago and seems to be getting worse. It has the LCM5 column lock fix as well as the skip shift lockout installed. Everything else is stock. Any ideas? This noise is driving me nuts.

Have you checked for codes?
My first thought is one or both of the HVAC actuators

Related HVAC Codes:

What is an actuator?

Those codes are all for the left actuator. Thats what makes it the air flow change from floor to vent and so forth

Got it thanks! I found some related tech info regrading this in the forum. Looks like the left actuator needs to be replaced. I'll study up on it and decide if I want to do it or take it to the shop. Thanks for the assistance!

The actuators in theses cars can be hard to get to in the dash. You will be priced ridiculous prices for them. You can get them for a fraction online.

The ACTUATORS actually control the TEMPERATURE of the air flow. When you change the Temp **** on the HVAC Control Module, it cause the actuator to change the position of a damper to allow more or less air flow over the AC Evaporator coil or the heater core.

Unless you are rolling in cash, the SHOP repair is normally very expensive..

The LEFT actuator can be accessed from under the dash but,,, its still a task that is a little tedious.

IF,, you remove the entire dash and dash pad,,, this is what it looks like from the TOP. Its above and a little inboard of the accelerator peddle

Here is a side shot with the air box removed:

Here is what you will most likely see if you open up your actuator. A cracked gear:

Not sure I have the requisite skill set to dismantle the dash and dash pad, replace the part and get everything back together properly. Would you also replace the right actuator as well since the dash is open and exposed? Are the post 2001 actuators better and will they work on the 99'?

My point of that reply was to let you know that YOU DO NOT need to dismantal the entire dash for the LEFT actuator. Just remove the drivers side under dash close out panel and GETERDONE! If you cant bend or are a little to round,, just remove the seat. Even I can fit under there with the seat out!!

You will save approx $400.

Indeed, thanks to you and Bill. This has to be one of the best forums on the internet. Always helpful folks here to assist with C5 Vette issues.

Here is how to remove the Knee Bolster for access to the driver side one. Some people do not remove all the console pieces to remove it but loosen up the piece at the ignition switch which can allow you to remove the bolster.
