Default Rear End rebuild?

I was not happy at Buttonwillow Raceway, late September. Car unsettled in places where I didn't think it should be, antiskid activating much more than usual, plus a brand new rear end whine that started on session two.

A rear end fluid change the next week revealed no visible metal. Red Line Heavy Shock Proof fluid eased the whine somewhat.

Today I had it up on jack stands to look at something and discovered that with the transmission in park, I can easily rotate one rear wheel and the other rear wheel rotates in the opposite direction. No limited slip.

The last time I had the car up, it took close to 100 foot pounds to rotate a rear wheel in park. I could take lug nuts off.

I am thinking that maybe one of the conical limited slip clutch pre load springs might have broken, unloading one set of limited slip clutches. Maybe disturbing ring and pinion setup somehow.

Until this discovery, I figured I would just turn up the stereo, ignore the whine and continue to track it once in a while.

Now I am thinking that the rear end needs to be rebuilt before tracking the car again, probably an RPM Stage 4 with Wavetrac.

The C5/C6 GETRAG Differential is very unique in that it takes a lot of special tools and spare GM Shims to set it up CORRECTLY. My GO TO GUY for C5/C6 differential work is Rick Kim. If Rick cant fix it, toss it.

I have to agree with your diagnosis on the Belleview Spring for the limited slip clutch packs. My 02 ZO6 had one broken spring when I did the C6 ZO6 hard part up-grade to it.

If you need a rebuild and a bullet proof treatment, Rick has ALL the parts and knowhow to build what you need. If nothing else, give him a call and discuss your needs and goals for the ultimate differential.

Bill,

Thanks for that input. I will check Rick's site out as well as the other links.

A sixty year buddy who raced C2's for many years mentioned that he set the C2 LS clutch packs up without springs, relying on spider gear thrust to generate clutch pressure. While that might work on a C5, in my case, probably only one spring has broken which would result in unequal drive torque and me all over the track even more than usual. I am thinking that it would not be a good idea to track the car until fixed.

ABSOLUTY!! If the spring is just cracked and flat, no big deal BUT,,, If it breaks off a chunk, Murphy says it will lodge in the spieder gear and BLAMO!

I made a thread that includes some pointers on rebuilding the diff. Unfortunately for me, part of the washer broke off inside the diff and got churned up. In the case of churned up metal, it would be wise to replace all the bearings as well as the gears. Nothing exactly went "BLAMO", LOL, but there was certainly a good possibility that may have happened, and luckily it did not crack the case. DTE makes some upgraded Belleville washers as well as upgraded clutch packs.

edit: just fixed the old image links in the thread

When I beefed up my 02 Z differential with C6 Z parts, I used Gene Culley for all the gaskets, output shaft parts, seals, beleview springs and C6 Clutches. I purchased a DTE cross shaft after seeing an OEM one shatter.
