Default 2002 speedometer history

A little background first.... In July I traded my Harley for a Pewter drop top 6 speed 102k miles. Salvage title but nearly undetectable repair of frontal damage. Unused lighter/ashtray no residue of any kind under console when I removed it to resolder the heater/ac leds. Cherry top, unfaded carpets and original mats with little wear Google maps shows that it was always garaged or at least had a garage on the owners house which seems to explain the great condition.
I have gone to some trouble to track ownership through the NMVTS (like carfax), the local dealers and the NC DMV with some success.
It was originally sold in Oklahoma to a successful middle aged couple and was used for 8 years and 42,000 miles. Sold on the net to a Marine in NC. After 2 years He sold it to another Marine 4/11 and after 16 months he wrecked it at 53,173 miles. Owner retained ownership but 10/12 transferred title to Geico, the lizzard auctioned it to someone in VA and at that time it was noted that the odo exceeds mechanical limits. When next titled 7/13 the odo read 99,202 so in 8 months the odo gained 46,029 miles.
I said all that to ask this, Odo says 102k condition seems to indicate less. I don't care either way but the mystery stirs my curiosity. If the Odo was damaged in the wreck wound not a new unit start at 0 and the discrepancy need to be noted when registered/sold? Or could a used Odo be installed as long as it shows no fewer miles? I am a bit reluctant to contact any more of previous owners because the first VA owner was less than cordial/helpful. Is there any way to interrogate the Odo system for historical info? This such a great car that I want to know everything about it.
Thanks for any help or ideas.

NOPE!!

I have several C5 IPC clusters at home and they ALL have different mileages recorded on their mother board memory chips. I can take the mother board out of any one of the three I have and stick them in my 02 ZO6 and get the OD to read what ever is on the spare mother board.

There are companies that have SPECIALIZED "EXPENSIVE" equipment that allows them to program the odometer to what mileage the need to.

There no way for you to read the memory (other to see what it displays on the OD) or to change it. (other than to replace the mother board in the IPC>

Here are a couple of post that you may be interested in:

Thanks Bill,
I appreciate the info. A 95 Impala SS that I used to own had a similar system. Now I am going to put a lot of my own miles on the Vette.

That seems a little too much for 8 months!...

What probably happened was that the IPC was replaced with a used one that had 40 something Ks more than the original IPC.
