I have a 99 covette Coupe the recall has been done to the car over a year ago that was supposed to take care of the column lock problem. On Monday the column locked up and I was unable to fix it with any of the solutions here. By the time a flat bed got to the car it was unlocked by itself. I orederd the bypass from COH and left the key in the ignition until the bypass arrived. I installed the bypass and went to start the car got pull key wait ten sec. sign and then service column lock the car will start and run but cant go over 1.5 mph. I have tried all the pull fuse tricks and disconnected the batter for an hour with no luck as soon as I try and drive the car shuts off. The car is out of warrenty. I have been told it may be the BCM if so can I replace that myself or does the dealer have to do it. Any help would be greatly appriciated thanks.
Do you have a 6-speed? If it is an auto, the recall work takes out the locking ring in the column. I had the CLB in my 99 and it worked fine. Once it is installed the column lock motor gets NO power to lock. The connector to the motor is just hanging unconnected. So as I read your post, the problem is now no power to drive, the column is unlocked? Sounds like the computer is confused. ther have been posts in the past on this problem. do a search to see if you can find them or hopefully a tech will answer. Don't give up.
Mine is samething ...
Dealer fixed last year but I just got it again but after yanked the steering wheel to the left and right couple times, it unlocked !!!
I have a six speed the column is no longer locked up but the DIC is still putting the error message Service Steering Column and I get the Pull Key wait ten sec. I then try and drive and the car shuts off after going over 1.5mph. Any other thing else you guys can think of would be great I have tried everything I can think off and everything that I have seen on here.
I had a C5 Solutions CLB on my wrecked FRC. Never had the recall work done and the CLB worked perfect with no codes on the DIC. I pulled that CLB off before the flatbed took her to the boneyard and reinstalled it on my white FRC. Paperwork provided by the previous owner showed the car having had the dealer fix put on the column. From everything I've read on their "fix" not being reliable I installed the CLB on the white one and everything is working perfect with no error codes or messages.
I would un-install the CLB with the key out of the ignition and then try to start the car. Hopefully it will clear and you can re-install the CLB. I don't think you should have installed the CLB with the key in the ignition. I assume the C5 is like the C4 in that the key in the ignition changes the computer status from "sleep" to "wake-up" mode.
Mine failed too! Dealership charged me around $120.00 for Chevrolets fix and $120.00 two hour labor fee to install it. Their fix is a relay module to fool the BCM and removed the steering column ring lock. But still left me with the dreaded "Sevice Column Lock" message each time I started my vet. I read in the factory service manual how to clear this alarm. Must remove fuse #25 and wait 15 seconds before reinstalling. This resets the BCM. And this fuse is located in the passenger side footwell. Hope this helps.

Re: Column lock bypass not working (TorchCoupe97)
As mentioned before...two possible reasons:
1). You got one of the defective COH Bypasses. (The resin inside is corroding the wires). Call Paul @ COH and he will replace it. To determine this is simple....Can you turn your steering wheel with the key out of the ignition?? If so, then the CLB is defective and causing the PCM to shutdown the fuel rails.
2). You installed it with the "key-on". The install instructions clearly state to install with "key-off". If you did not hear the Column Lock motor "buzz" for a second when you used the cigarette lighter adapter to disengage the mechanism, you did not permanently set the CL to the disengage position.
Thanks for all the suggestions I Have tried everything listed and have decided it is prob. the BCM my AC duct was leaking and from what I have seen on here that is a problem and may have caused the steering column lock up in the first place. I looked at the BCM and it doesnt look like it has gotten wet. There was even a little dust around the bottom of it. The carpet wasnt wet around the BCM either so I am not sure. Is there anyway to check the BCM or reset it. I have tried pulling the fuses and tried disconnecting the battery for an hour with no luck. Thanks for the help
