Default HUD Access

Lot's of HUD threads but I could not get an answer if accessing the HUD can also be done similar to the C6 where you can access thru the gauge cluster and cutting the AC duct crossing behind the gauge cluster.

Thanks

Yes but removing the dash would make it so much easier and not a hack job.

Just bag and tag all the various fasteners. Easy novice DIY job.

Mr. Sam

Thank you Mr. Sam, still nervous about breaking the small tabs, etc. Id rather cut the AC duct than break all kinds of fasteners. Anyway thank you I will give this some thought

The hud is held into the firewall by 2 tabs with screws? in it. You have to lift the HUD up and out of those hole. with the dash in, I say not really happening. Mine also have rubber mounts with screws that I have to back out to get it loose. It is already hard enough with the dash out and the windshield right there to do this. I don't know what the factory uses to mount them as I put mine in myself.

If you are thinking of cutting the actual AC vent there, I would try and not do it. a few more screws and you can pull that dash out. You can probably get away without totally removing the dash pending what is holding your hud to the fire wall. The bezel is another thing to be concerned about if it is old. Probably crack on you.

I guess that is a way to do it. I cringed the whole time.

The cutting and using a soldering iron on it again reinforces. Lazy vs taking time to remove the dash. Seemed all the time he spent fighting with it, he could of removed the dash. I know it seems petty in the scale of fix a hud mirror = remove the whole dash.

If he had the dash out, he could actually cut it nice and clean and make parts to where he could slide it in and out in the future without needing tape. Which seems like another level of frustration to go through.

I don't know. I have pulled my dash 4-5 times. I would still avoid doing this cut job. Honestly the hardest part of removing the dash from the C5 is messing around with the glove box area. everything else is easy.

I have dash in and out a lot these days messing with the hud and console mods. I will take a look at it and see if it is really possible. (unbolt the ac vents) Minus my 2 hud rubber grommets with actual screws in it holding it down to the front. Maybe I will change the way that works as well.

I agree with you 100% removing the dash is the proper way to do it when new. I have had bad experiences removing old plastic pieces. They crack, break off, etc. then the trim does not clip on properly or rattles, falls off. When they break it is hard to buy new pieces you have to buy used ones which are just as brittle and old as the one that broke.

I like your idea of taking out the dash one time and fabricating things so that next time you would not need to remove the dash and everything would just be a connection etc.

Thanks for the input and we shall see. In fact the surround trim around the radio on my car does not clip anymore on the passenger side I think somebody tried to remove it and broke a tab or two.

I pulled my dash yesterday to run a wire for hands free. Took me 7 mins to get the dash out. Once you've done it a couple times, it's super easy. I pulled the dash, checked the operation of my acutators and servos, ground some off my console for the double din, ran the wire for the handsfree and put it all back together in an hour and 5 mins. SUPER EASY
