Default Steering Wheel Speed Sensor Problem - C1287

2004 Lemans Commemorative Convertible

I'm having an intermittent issue
Active Handling message come on when driving staight
If Cruse Control is engaged it will disengage.
Occasionally feel brakes slightly engage.

A few times get message Service Traction Control
with code C1287 Steering Sensor Rate Malfunctionn

Most the time code shows History. Occasionally Current.

So finally my question. Is this most likely a defective Steering
Wheel Speed Sensor. Or is it most likely a connection / ground
problem. What is the best way to trouble shoot this?

Thanks for any advise!

The good news is the SWPS for your 2004 is still available from GM. I purchased a new one for a spare for my 2001 and I believe it was $74.00. There are a lot of more knowledgeable members than I and they will jump in and help you. Good luck.

By the way, if I think about it, I turn off active handling. That seem to eliminate Cruse Control disengage. Always turn it off after first time it disengages.

That is the SWPS going out. Did the same thing on my 04'. Bought mine from Gene at Gultrag Performance ( I believe that is his new company name) for about $65. The part # is 88965543. It has been a few years since I replaced it and everything has been fine. Gets pretty scary driving at freeway speeds when you get a sudden pull to the sides. You can disable it for safe driving by turning the AH/TC off.

Yep, it's kinda scary. Seems like it should have been a recall. Was Gultrag's part GM or OEM. Looks like a fairly complex job. Don't want to do it twice.

Not really a hard job. Takes a couple of hours. A little harder if you have the telescoping steering wheel option. Just be careful around the airbag and make sure you keep the steering wheel straight. I had a corvette mechanic friend of mine do mine. I just helped out and learned from him.
