Default HC vs SC ? What am I missing here???

Why would you pay 10k for the LPE SC package on an LS1 and get around 390-400rwhp on an A4 when you can pay 5k for a KICKbutt Katech H/C package that would give you the same rwhp? Am I missing something here? I have been on the fence about his for ALONG time. But I have opted to go the H/C route to save the 5k. What am I missing here????

Hey Black , we all start with some basic bolt on mods ( Blackwind, headers, exhaust etc..) then we migrate to a nice H&C set up ( at least most of us do ) .. Then the MOD fever kicks in , the rush we used to get with the H&C go away..and we yearn for more. We then opt for N2O , More Cubes or an SC.( or a combintaion of all listed )

Your not missing anything , everybody has there own individual thought process, rationalisation and choice's when we get into this game ( and budget ).

My dream initially was to flatbed my car to LPE for an SC set up..After i researched the costs i decided to go with a $5K H&C pkg.
Some guys will go LPE right out the gate, now in hindsight i'm very happy i didn't go with LPE's basic Magnasun pkg...If i was going to go LPE today i would go 427 TT or nothing.

The results you can get from some of todays H&C pkgs can blow away the basic LPE set up for less cost..But then again you may have to deal with reliabilty issues down the road with a H&C set up..Not to mention warranty challenges.

Bottom line is its a matter of preference.. My best advice would be to hook up with a couple local forum members with different set ups and discuss it directly with them..Take a ride in there cars and decide what feels right to you.

But i can tell you one thing for sure, no matter what choice you make..It's just a matter of time and you will want more HP / TQ ;)

We all do sooner or later..In my case it was sooner rather than later :yesnod:

Good luck !

Jeff

Sooner or later, when the fever hits, you WILL want more.

The lingenfelter package doesn't have to cost $10k. If you put it on yourself, you're only looking at about $6k...some people want a new hood anyway, making it about the same price. Of course, I'm putting on Lingenfelter's CNC LS1 heads AND the magnuson s/c along with a more aggressive cam. Should net me somewhere nearer to 500RWHP, though I doubt I'll get quite there... With me doing the work and selling old parts, I'm only going to be in this about $6-7k.

The same reason people prefer Pamela Anderson over Elizabeth Hurley (or vice versa), or a Viper over a Vette, or a Ferrari over a Lambo, it's all preferance my brother. :yesnod:

I opted for the H/C package, and I am very pleased with the results. My car still has stock idle, can handle bumber to bumper traffic without any problems, no matter which avenue you choose, one other thing to consider is that the clutch will need to be replaced, the stock clutch isn't capable of handeling the additional power.

Flyskate, What exact cam do you have that gives a Stock idle and 420rwhp? Or is the idle just realiy good and strong and stable, but really not quite like stock? I am cam shopping and would really appreciate your input.

The torque curve on the magnuson supercharger is much different than my H&C setup- the torque for that SC comes on far earlier and stays on longer. The torque curve for my H&C is peaky. So even though my peak numbers may be in the ballpark of the supercharger, the overall area under the curve is far greater for the supercharger. That said, I love my heads & cam and have had no issues with them whatsoever. The car is a daily driver (my only car) and got 46000 miles on it (about 8000 since the h&c work).

Good luck.
Justin

P.S. My torque curve

CJS, Not exactly sure of cam specs, it was the mildest cam offered by Cartek for their H/C package.. I'll call them and repost with info, ASAP :D
