What is the easiest way to get the axles seated in the diff? I have the axles in and there is about 1/4" of space between the shoulder and the case.

Here's my opinion, I haven't actually had my axels out but in today's cars, the axle is usually free floating in the differential. The axle is held in place by being bolted in the hub, which is bolted to the steering knuckle, which is connected to the control arms which in connected to the frame. as the suspension works up and down, the axle will move in and out of the differential slightly, so there has to be some space for that movement. If these are different axels than what you took out, it's likely they won't look exactly the same. If they are the same axles, then it probably has to do with the position of the steering knuckle.
Hope this helps.
Phil; if you have the tires off and the rear axles hanging down freely; I don't think the axles will snug up completely into the carrier. If I remember, I had to load up the rear suspension to get the axles closer to the carrier before I could get them all the way snugged up into the carrier.
Did you just push the axles in or did you use a pry bar to press them? The axles are pretty tight so I am thinking I need a bar to pop them over the retaining ring.
