There is good thread with pictures about this and I will definitely be referring to the pictures. Question 1, is this the correct part #88965543 for the sensor? I did see this on GMpartsdirect. Just wanted confirmation from you guys here. Question 2, which is a fear of mine. Would it still be possible to do this WITHOUT removing the CLB? I ask because I had that done years ago by a good friend of mine when I was stationed in Littlerock, and THE day I dropped my car off to his shop for other stuff the factory recall failed (which he warned me it would) and he ordered the CLB on the spot. I don't know if that motor is working and my fear reversing it would be NOT getting it to unlock for the CLB reinstall. One last thing, I'm going to get flack for this I know, the car needs an alignment. The steering wheel hasn't been straight since ive had the car (9 years this August). Yes may the Corvette gods slap me down. BUT this has never been an issue with how it drives other than a slight pull which I just got used to all these years.
Yes that is the correct number for the SWPS. But only if your car is an 01 or newer. Like what Mr. Sam has asked why do you think it is bad? Did you pull your codes from the DIC or just guessing.
I'm sorry I didn't clarify. Yes I have an 01ZO6 and I'm currently down range but due to come home soon. I cant remember the code off the top of my head but yes I checked the codes during the time it was acting up and it was the one for the SWPS. I cleared it as I always do most codes and after a couple days it came back. A few days before I left home, I would clear it and it would come back in under 30 sec or so.
The codes for a bad SWPS will be C1287 and/or C1288. I bought mine from Gene at www.cultragfactoryparts.com. Great service and prices. Make sure you get it aligned properly when you install it.
I'm certain it was C1287. I still would like info from someone who has done this without locking the steering wheel. That is my biggest concern. I don't want to disturb the clock spring inside the column.
What CLB do you have?? All most of them are is a small module that plugs into the connector to the BCM. It plugs into a very small connector under the column.
This is a Corvettes Of Houston Column Lock Bypass Kit. It consist of the MODULE and the 12 VDC cigarette plug that energizes the motor to the UNLOCKED position. Once the motor is forced to the unlocked position, you no longer need the 12 VDC harness
It simply plugs into the small socket where the column lock motor connector pluged into the BCM harness connector under the column.
Yours is most likely very similar if not the same one:
He needs to do more than just unplug the CLB module for the column to begin locking/unlocking again. He needs to plug the connector from the lock motor back into the connector that the CLB was connected into. Then he needs to put the key in the ignition and start the car and then shut the car off and remove the key and make certain that the column is physically locked. He MAY get the "Pull key...." message as a part of this process. If tha happens then he needs o do exactly what the message says, pull the key and wait at least 10 seconds and then try again....
Once the SWPS has bee replaced he can reinstall the CLB. If you don't remember how to do that here is a link that will refresh your memory:
I must of misread or didn't understand that he wanted to make the lock functional again.. Sorry for the confusion.
I'm sorry if I confused you both! Yes Bill when reading through here https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-sensor-2.html
They say to remove your CLB if you already have it installed so the steering wheel would lock and one wouldn't be able to move it when prying and pulling to get it out of the car. That way there would be no error in accidentally having airbag problems. That was the reason I was asking if it could be done without removing the CLB. Any ideas to keep the steering wheel from moving WITHOUT it locking? A tie down or something?
I guess I can attempt the motor locked way. Ill just do some praying (if It will even lock properly) it UNLOCKS so I will be able to reinstall the CLB. As my understanding, the CLB is no good if the steering wheel is already locked.....There in lies my fear
Wow I'm so sorry for all the confusion. Thank you 8VETTE7! Hopefully I wont need to take you up on the offer. The steering wheel isn't locked nor has it been since the CLB has been installed. I have no issues in this regard. I wanted to get a jump on what I'm doing when I get home so I can get started with this asap. I am worried about creating an issue when I remove the CLB and locking the wheel because I'm just paranoid about it NOT unlocking when its time to put everything back together. I just don't know another way of keeping the steering wheel from moving without it being locked in place from crap factory lock mechanism. Doesn't look like I have much choice. From the reading ive done, some guys had to pull on their steer wheel pretty hard to get the whole column out.
. I already have your number. . You have helped so many im sure you have forgot. You n Bill BOTH helped me trace down a HORRIBLE electrical issue i was having which turned out t be a loose ground behind the head. Im going to reverse the CLB to reengage the lock n go from there. Rest assure, when i start this little job, if i run into any hiccups ill call or pm you
