2001 Z06 130,000 miles. Today on my way to work I started having a very strange sound. It appears to be coming from somewhere inside the lower center of the dash. It is a roaring sound and seems to be directly related to the transmission. If I shift into neutral and coast it goes away. It gets louder when I coast in gear. When I am rolling up to a stop at 10MPH with the clutch in and downshifting from second into first the sound speeds up. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
Could be several things. Pilot bearing, torque tube bearing, torque tube coupling, throwout bearing, anything directly tied to engine rotational speed.

Are all of those things located foward of the shift **** inside the dash?
I've looked up some of the parts listed and it looks like a pricey and expensive repair for whatever small part it could be. At this point with 130,000 miles and all original transmission. Would you guy instead of replacing the defective part and paying the labor for just that part. Opt to have the clutch and all barings replaced? I've had the car for 13 years and I still love it and plan on keeping it for as long as I can!
Bill is exactly right. When my 128K Coupe had the pilot bearing start making noise, I knew it had to be changed. I didn't have the tools, time or desire to pull the drive train. Since the labor was ~$1000 to R & R the drive train, I decided I was only paying the labor once. So the car got a new pilot, LS6 clutch, slave, torque tube bushings and bearings, re-sealed the trans and did an internal inspection, replaced reverse gear that looked funky, re-sealed the differential. Drives like new now.

Agreed its time to do the same with mine. What was the total cost out the door for this service you had?
