Default Gasket Removal Help - Harmonic Damper

<warning backyard mechanic >

I'm replacing the HB on my sons '98 c5 and the gaskets are easy to remove and the surfaces are easy to clean up.

BUT, BUT,

The water pump has a GM Paper(?) gasket or some aftermarket "black" glue gasket. So far nothing will soften or remove it (brake fluid, Permatex Gasket Removal, paint thinner, Acetone, etc.). I'm trying to scrape it off with a razor blade but I'm putting nicks in the aluminum of the water pump mating surfaces.

I'm not really afraid of slight nicks and scratches but I'm working on my son's car and I'd like to this correctly and be able to use the new style gaskets. (Me, I'd go old school and use gasket material with Permatex on both sides.)

Suggestions ? -- or don't worry about it ..

YEP,, that BLACK gasket is a RROYAL PITA! I carefully shaved mine off with a razor blade. I also used a very sharp putty knife.

If you lay the razor blade almost FLAT and rock it side to side, it will get under the gasket and not damage the surface.

OK based on all the advice I used Bill Curlee's method shaved the gasket as thin as possible, then jimmyLSX's green Scotchbrite pad (soaked in BrakeKleen) for the last bit.

Fairly quick way of cleaning and leaves a perfect surface (IMHO). Thanks to all and I hope this helps someone else.
