Gonna pull one off without removing tranny or tube. Just curious about how much I'll be wrestling around. I have a tranny jack, but still envision some good upper body exercise.
I believe their isnt enough space to remove the differential from the transmission given the space. You can remove the transmission+differential and leave the torque tube in place. But you're better off dropping the whole thing and looking through it. Dont forget to drain the diff. Torque tube is 50lbs, T56 dry weight 115lb, and like neutron said the diff around 75lbs

if you remove the cradle and suspension first you could then lower the rest of the drivetrain enough to pull the diff off of the trans but I do agree that you're better off taking it all out and at least inspecting everything... it would be the perfect time to do a clutch/remote bleeder if it's a 6spd, rebuild the torque tube, do some upgrades to the trans/diff, etc... it can get expensive real fast

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm just gonna yank the diff and install some "grin gears". Just wondering how many buddies I needed to drag it into the truck. Whole car is in great shape so I'm not gonna go much further. Just another item on my Bucket List that I never got around to.
You can't pull the diff with out pulling the exhaust mid pipe and the tunnel plate. How do I know this, I just spent hours trying to do it. You can not lower the trans down far enough. The trans output shaft is just to long, the back of the diff will not go to the rear enough. I even puled the back cover off the diff to gain an extra inch and it's still not enough. This was on a 6 speed car, I don't know about the auto.
If you pull the diff far enough take the guts out,Pull off the pass. side cover,There is 2 allen head screws that hold one of the studs in,take that off and then pull out the ring gear with 2 shafts connected to it.It makes the diff alot lighter and easier to handle and I think you can twist it enough to pull it off the output shaft,Easy as that
Thanks. got that baby off pretty easily. Did go ahead and pull the exhaust and tunnel plate, and loosened a few hoses and things behind the engine. Dropped the rear about 8 inches and she slid right off. Much lighter than anticipated (when it's strapped to a tranny jack - Ha). Pulling the gear carrier out sounds interesting, but after getting it all rebuilt, I 'm kinda leery about doing that to get her back in, so I'll just reverse the remove process.

But, all things considered, this has to be the very worst differential to get out I ever encountered. Well, there's ANY front-drive car I guess, or a Porsche. but we don't recognize the existence of any of those things on this forum, right guys?
Over the last 3 weekends 4 of us pulled 2 complete drive lines. Got them out within 2hrs taking our time. One car we replaced the torque tube the other got a rear main seal.
