K&N CAI Question?

Is it absolutely necessary to cut the lower radiator cover for the silly vent opening for the install of a K&N 57-3035 on my '01 vert? I can't figure out how this benefits in any way and it seems like alot of work for no apparent reason. Anyone that didn't cut out the vent have any input? Thanks
