my 98 C5 6spd has serious electrical problems. I have spoke with every willing to listen and studied on line followed every lead and thought and still nothing. Was in a chevy dealership, shop They had no clue. Here`s the fun part. engine ran fine, at a stop light one day it stalled. Would just fire and not run, tried several times. had it towed to dealership. 6hrs later said bad BCM maybe. I trailered it home. It will not read codes off dash or scanner, every ground on car is perfect, new battery, all relays all fuses perfect. it will run time to time. display reads reduced eng power, check gauges, low fuel , low oil pressure, serv engine soon,, and the windows and door lock do not work. ABS, traction control, check engine light are all on, tach works when it does run, amp gauge works. fuel and oil , temp gauge is inop. security light goes off like it should. help ?
Pull the BCM out and check it for evidence of water damage. Bill Curlee had a post about it some time ago. Look in the sticky thread at the top of the C5 Tech section about electrical problems and search for BCM. I'm not sure about finding a replacement easily but Marc at Vettenuts (forum supporting vendor) may have one. I bought one for my 2002 Z06 online from one of the major parts suppliers for less than $100. A replacement will have to be programmed by someone with a Tech II to enable all the options on your particular car.
Start with the serial data buss star connector. It cheep and easy. Only disconnect the connector with FOUR wires.. If you disconnect the other connector, you will lose ALL comms and the car will not run.
The second place to check is the IGNITION SWITCH. Before you get to wrapped around the wheel, I would turn the ignition switch to ON and check the Hot in ON and START powered fuses at the BCM and PCM to make sure that they are getting FULL battery voltage. That power comes directly from the Ignition Switch.
If the contacts are damaged/burnt. you could be seeing very low voltages on those fuses.
THUS the Stealer Ship would have said that the BCM isn't working!
NOTE! Each FUSE has two little TEST SLOTS on top of the fuse. With the IGNITION ON, Measure each slot to a good chassis ground and look for FULL BATTERY voltage at each test slot.
