I have a question regarding the normal idle speed for an un modified 2003 A4.
I can't find any specs in my FSM.
It is my son's car. It idles at 600RPM in neutral & 500 RPM in gear.
There are no performance/driveability issues. He feels this is too low.
Just for comparison my unmodified 2002 manual idles at just under 800 RPMs.
Thanks, Bill
And if the car doesn't stall, that 500 rpm is enough, right?
That's pretty much in line with my car too and it runs and performs just fine with 92,500 miles on it.

My son has never elaborated as to whether he had stalling issues.
He posed this question about a year and a half ago and I couldn't find any info.
I replaced his hazard switch for him a couple of days ago and after several hrs. of coaxing a very discharged Optima red top back to life I was able to start the car and check out all the systems. I was surprised that the car idled so low.
When revving in neutral and coming back to idle sometimes I could see and feel a speed droop below 600RPM and the engine felt like it was going to stall but always recovered. I didn't check it in drive.
Any way it seems to be happy where it's at.
Thanks for the reply, Bill
