My son took my 98 Vert out for a spin ... I know that was my first mistake. The story goes that he backed into a parking spot, went in a store, came out ... he started the car with no issues ... he shifted down into "drive" and the car started to back-up ... he slammed the brakes, through it up into "park" ... and for some reason he turned the car off ... he went to start the car and it would not start ... he shifted into neutral and still would not start ... had a flatbed come and haul it to the house. I just got around to looking at it ... At first i suspected the Park/Neutral Switch but ...
The car is in "Park" and I can push it quite easily. I found that very odd. So I'm thinking it could be something other than the PNS. I have not done anything yet but really do not feel like going down a bunch of rabbit holes trying to fix this thing.
Have you checked the shift cable? The plastic ends tend to become brittle and break off - generally the front goes first. What you perceive as park could be some other gear. Get the car in the air and look to see if the transmission changes gears on the trans when the gear shifter is moved by a helper. Easy is a relative term - it does take some work and it's easier from the bottom if can get the car on a lift.

Reason: Add info.

That was the problem. The front was disconnected. Thanks a bunch.
I reconnected it ... started and shifted fine. Went to put the center console back together (a project all on it's own) and it must have come disconnected again. Can't mess with it too much right now. I'll look at it better tomorrow. Have to see if the clip is broken and how hard it'll be to replace it.

Thanks again.
The tunnel plate has to be removed so the exhaust has to be dropped. Not bad on a lift with the proper tools.
See Post #19 in the link below. Replacement grommets are available for the shifter cable that makes the repair a little easier than replacing the whole cable. Be careful with the cable! It's delicate and breaks easily if bent too far.
Fixed it. Appreciate all the input. $6 bushing kit from auto zone Dorman PN 14041. Used the second to smallest size ... removed the broken bushing ... pair of pliers to snap the new bushing in place and then the shifter ****. Hardest part was taking the center console apart (I always hate doing that) ... done.
While I had the car up form checking the back bushing I too the tim to deep clean my wheels and inner fender wells, and painted my calipers ... Very productive day!!!
Thanks again for all the input guys. I know that there are a number of posts about this but sometimes it's hard to narrow it down just with a few keyword searches ... especially when you don't quite know what to call the lil piece you are looking for
