Ignition switch replacement, someone's been here before
Hi all,
I'm in the process of replacing my ignition switch to see if it will cure some of the issues I'm having ("U" codes, traction control message, A/C not coming on, etc.). When I removed the console and lower panel, I found that someone had had it aprat before, and they were pretty ham-fisted about it.
There were a couple of screws missing, the cig lighter wasn't connected at the dash and the round bezel around the ign switch was broken, though it couldn't be seen as it was just around the edge and the panel was covering it.
None of those are a big deal, but I did find two other things I'm not sure about. Do you know what the part is in the first three pics? It was laying under the console, disconnected from anything and broken.
Also in the fourth pic is some sort of sensor/element that is supposed to be sitting behind the little slotted "grill" next to the ign switch. It was laying free so the front was not behind the grill and the back was not pushed into the flared receptacle behind it. What is this device, and what problems could it cause not being installed correctly?
That's definitely your console latch. If you open your console lid you will see a hook on it. Watch where the hook goes when your closing the lid. That is where that latch goes into. Yours is clearly broken (common wear item, no biggie). Just order a new one, they're like 20 bucks. The replacement will snap in from the top. Just push it in and you're back in business.
Thanks guys, you're right it was the latch. This is my wife's car and I didn't know that it wasn't latching. I'll get a new one.
Good news! The new ignition switch cleared up the codes and the A/C comes on again (didn't work at all before). Plus I fixed a carb problem on my 1970 L46 Vette and it's running great. Good day in CorvetteLand!
