Default Dash Lights dim or not on

My 01 came up with an issue a while back.

The dash lights are not on (or very dim) during normal operation. The MPH light seems to glow just a little. The rest of the gauge lights don't seem to be on at all. It seems like the dimmer is all the way down.

The dimmer is actually up all the way. And as soon as you turn on the driving lights or headlights it works normally, the lights come on.

It is just when the lights are off and driving in the daylight. It is not really an issue except when you are in a darker area.

I can get the gauge lights to come on if I flick on the driving lights. However it would be nice if they worked correctly.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Mark

The back lighting for the dash is OFF during the day UNLESS you turn the parking lamps or headlights to the ON position. When you do turn on the parking or headlamps you will notice that the dash backlighting comes ON while the lighting of the PRNDL (if you have an automatic), the radio, the HVAC control head, the door switches, the window switches and several other non dash lights are turned down to the lighting level set by the dimmer. Those latter lights are normally at full brightness during the day so that for example you can read messages displayed in the DIC or see the HVAC settings etc.

If you like I can provide a copy of how the interior lighting works from the shop manual in this thread, but I have to warn you that you will need your thinking cap firmly in place as it is not bedtime reading..... It spans 2+ pages in the shop manual.

sounds normal to me, gauge backlights come on with park/headlights on.

Thanks, however the gauge lights did work, albeit more dim than at night, and all of sudden they were not working. The lights should work as you cannot see the gauges in dim light, my garage, under a bridge, etc...
