I was driving 02 Z06 on the highway in 6th gear and the engine RPM increased liked it had popped out of gear. I checked that it was still in gear, it was, then checked 5th and the same thing. No grinding or noise at all. All the other gears to include reverse work fine. I checked the shifter alignment and it was fine. 5th and 6th gears are separate gears on the shaft so I wouldn't think they would both fail at once. I am thinking it must be a problem with a bent shift fork or the fork pads. Leading up to the problem I had noticed the rear of the car would wobble sometimes when I upshifted to 6th at low RPM under power. I am guessing I am going to have to pull the xmsn but maybe somebody knows a quick fix?
No quick fix. It is the transmission. I had something similar happen earlier this year. Wound up having the mainshaft replaced along with 5th & 6th gears, synchros etc. Wasn't cheap but working fine now.

Yea I was afraid it would be. Did the gears come off the shaft or what? Probably cheaper to buy a used one?

Might be cheaper to buy used but you don't know what you're buying. Expect $2500 - $3500 for a repair. Could be less if you pull / install the trans on the car.
In my case, the teeth on the shaft wore out. The bottle gears remained on the shaft.

Did it make any noise when you put it into 5th or 6th gear, or driving in any other gear? Mine doesn't and I would think that it would.

If you still have reverse gear, its your 5-6 cluster gear splines are gone along with the splines on the main shaft where that cluster sits. 5th and 6th DRIVEN gears are made on the same cluster. At a very minimum, you'll need a main shaft and 5-6 cluster gear.

That is what mine required. The tranny did not make any noise in any gear after 5th and 6th went out. 1st - 4th and reverse worked with no issues.
