does my 1997 limit the rpm`s? reason I ask, is I was pulling codes and got one that said I exceeded 7400 rpms, its an automatic.
My 99 manual does at 6200 (was raised with a tune from 6000) if you hit 7400 I think your engine would be in pieces, or at least I would think so !!!!!
Have you been manually downshifting in your automatic at highway speeds? If not, you should be fine. (Even second gear at highway speeds in the A4 shouldn't go to 7400, should it? Second is 2.33 the ratio of fourth, and if you're at 2500 rpm at highway speeds, shifting to second would only be 5800 rpm.)

do you know if the tune has been altered?... 7400 is crazy high for an internally stock engine... if it is really revving that high I wouldn't expect the rod bolts to last very long if you continue to do that, especially on a 97
Hum. I might grab an ELM327 and the torque app or a similar app for your phone, whatever out there can log your RPMs for you. Drive around with that, review the data, see if your RPMs are ever reported to go that high. I would guess this is a spurious event, not real; 7400 is almost a thousand higher than your redline, and the automatic transmission should never let that happen.
