The A4 cars being repaired under the recall for the electronic steering column lock problem are getting fitted with a kit that prevents the locking mechanism from engaging, although the actuator remains active. The BCM still reads the proper signals and does not disable the car, even though the steering wheel is not locked.
My car was repaired under the recall and my steering wheel now remains unlocked, even with the ignition switch in the off position and the key withdrawn from the lock. I do know that you can order the kit from GM parts, but you wuld need to check with someone who is knowledgable as to whether it is a difficult undertaking and if special tools are required. The part numbers are: 88952427 - Harness Kit & 26056108 - Nut. The kit includes a new steering column lock plate and lock actuator relay plus the new steering wheel nut. 01044A is the recall campaign number.
I watched my 99 recall work being done. You have to pull the steering wheel off as well as the air bag of course. It was a bit involved. Main part replaced is the locking ring. the new one is actually a spacer that has NO locking slots for the motor pin to engage. then there is a wiring harness that allows the installation of a new additional relay. This relay is sort of a backup for the computer to not stall the car if a malfunction of the locking motor. At least this is what I got out of the installation. Kit is all in one box from GM.
