I'm getting a 03 with just 13k miles from the original owner. Should I still do the steering wheel lock modification? Where can I get it if yes I should? Thanks
First, what transmission is the car, as 2001-2004 automatics were not subjected to the column lock recalls and do not require a column lock bypass (CLB). If it is a manual transmission car, then yes you should purchase a CLB.
Second, you wouldn't be performing a "steering wheel lock modification." The CLBs like the popular LMC5 and the classic Corvettes of Houston -type CLB retain whatever current lock plate is housed in the column but replaces the signal sent by the BCM.
Mileage is no consideration into whether or not a CLB should be installed. Owners had CLB issues while C5s were new and some have driven 150,000+ miles with no issue. There's really no quantifiable factors as to when a CLB issue would arise other than maintaining good battery voltage, maintaining clean chassis grounds, and carrying a crap load of luck.
