Default Ordered New BOSCH SR8581N Starter

Just ordered new bosch starter sr8581n from amazon, this says its correct part for my 2002 C5. I'm curious if this will come with new starter bolts? It does come with a new solenoid correct?

I would like to replace starter bolts when I do the job, but not sure if its necessary? Am I able to order bolts from amazon too? I wasn't able to find ones that fit my 2002 C5.

If all works out the way they say I should have my new starter tonight by 9pm?!

I will be shocked!!

Total price was like $123

I have one on my car and it has been working great... it comes with one long bolt to replace the existing short bolt... you can resuse the original long bolt, you shouldn't have any issues doing that

Mine has about 5,000 miles on it and no problems at all.

yep I used this stuff, https://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Tec-13...e+heat+barrier ... that is more than enough to do a starter but you will end up using it in other places as you work on the car and it works great... I cut out formed sheets of it and wrapped the body of the starter and the solenoid and used some zip ties as a backup in case the adhesive ever failed... my headers are also coated so that helps a lot, the last time I had the drivetrain out it all looked good

You already have one long bolt and the starter/ solenoid comes with another long bolt so use those two. Yes it comes with a new solenoid.

Another question that makes me wonder, when I was buying bosch starter on amazon, I saw others like the reman-acdelco selling for 140? Why is that selling for more than the new bosch one I bought??

The name AC Delco will most of the time command a premium price although they are re-manufactured by a contract vendor.

The Bosch unit appeared to me to be a high quality part. Like I said above no problems almost 6000 miles now and a year and a half.

Be sure to contact Bosch and request they increase their prices. I'm sure they'd like to hear that.

Yep, install was kind of a PITA but nothing unusual - and it's been trouble-free on a daily driver for 2 years now.

Bump....

Anyone get squeal with a new starter install? Did you shim it?

I've tried 2 starters now on my 2000 camaro with the same LS1 engine.

SUM-829200
Bosch SR8581N

Both squeal as if the starter teeth are engaging the flywheel for too long.

No stripped bolt holes
Torque to spec 37 ft/lbs.

I'm using a 168 tooth B&M flexplate 20304 which was working fine with the stock starter.

The only reason why I replaced the stock one is because I read that the truck starters with the longer bolt could save my block from cracking where the starter mounts.
It's not belts. Those were removed and the problem is there.

Has anyone used the 2 bolt truck starter with success with an aftermarket flywheel? What brand was used? No high pitched screech on startup?
I have a B&M 168 tooth flex plate (same as stock), so maybe the stock starter with one long bolt and one small bolt has the tolerances to handle any slight differences in my aftermarket flex plate while the BOSCH SR8581N and SUM-829200 does not. The starting position of the gear on the bendix has me wondering where the position of that gear is on these that use the long 2 bolts:

ACDELCO 3231637
ACDELCO 3361932A
ACDELCO 3231656

AC DELCO 3371115 uses 1 long and 1 short bolt, the stock replacement.

Stock on top, truck starter on bottom:

Stock LS1 starter:

Truck starter

The AC Delco truck starter in this last pic looks like the gear is pushed in a little more than the aftermarket ones I've seen. Still not tucked in like stock 4th gen fbody or Corvette OEM starters with the short bolt. I'm not sure how big of a difference this makes as the contact point on the flywheel when extended is what matters. I really need to get this on a lift and have someone start it while I look at the contact points. A little water based paint on the teeth of the starter gear should tell what is actually happening here. I wonder if the problem goes away with a stock flywheel with one of these truck starters lol.....

I checked the starters on the testing device at O'Reilly and they extended fully and spun without issue.

This is good to know. I have no idea why the factory starter works but these long bolt truck starters when mounted and torqued perfectly do not.

What did you end up doing? i have the EXACT same problem. My OEM starter (With finicky solenoid) makes zero noise. A brand new Bosch SR8581N squealed horrible on start, almost like it was grinding internally. tried shimming it and it got even worse. One time it did not even engage the ring gear just that high pitched grinding.

BTW this is on an LS3 with Monster 18lb Billet Steel Flywheel

I purchased a power master xs torque series PWM-9509 from Summit. Installed it and I didn't have to shim a thing, all I had to do was clock it to clear my long tubes. Its a very quality piece. Wish I would have used it from the start. You will want to call up Powermaster and have them recommend what you should use on your application. This was on a 2000 LS1 5.7 with a 4L60E trans. Forget Bosch..... it's hit or miss.

I ended up buying an AC Delco 6.0 Escalade Starter for an 07 (i think) Part number 337-1033. It is about 1/2" shorter and has a smaller diameter body than the LS1/6 starters but it is still rated at 1.7kW. Put the part number because in all these threads no one ever does...

Bolted up perfect, solenoid in the exact same spot, runs perfectly no strange noises. The Bosch starter was just garbage and mustve been stripped internally or just sounds god awful. It wasnt grinding my flywheel that I could see but it sounded like it was grinding internally to the starter. Junk... only buying AC Delco starters from now on.
