2004 C5, 6-speed, stock, about 88k miles. Parked the car at Autozone to pick up some stuff; when I went to drive away the car lurched forward and died. Clutch pedal seems to have full range of motion. Can put shifter in gear with engine off, but not on. In fact, trying to put it in 1st from neutral with engine on makes it want to creep forward ever so slightly.
Feels to me like the clutch isn't releasing. Master cylinder reservoir is full, well maybe 3/4" below the brim.
Thoughts? Any other possibilities? Prolly gonna have it towed home, but I'm in the middle of a clutch job on a Miata, so there's no room in my driveway for a few days.
Are you sure it is going into 1st with the engine off? Have you put into gear, when off, then tried pushing the car? Can you put the car into first then start it? Sounds to me like you lost 1st / 2nd gear. Have you tried 3rd with engine running? You could get the car home that way if you can engage 3rd and higher.
Put the car up on jackstands, dropped the H-pipe, and removed the clutch inspection cover. Nothing looks obviously broken, can't see any fluid leaks--just a bunch of what looks like friction surface dust.
Next step is to get my fiancee to work the clutch pedal while I observe from below. Will try to take video to post here. The C5 hydraulic clutch isn't boosted is it?
Anyone got any other thoughts about how to proceed?
I assume those 4 pressure plate fingers on the right side not springing back as much as the other is a bad thing. What causes such a thing? The do spring, just not as much.
I guess a clutch job is in my future?
