Default Differential Seal/O-ring change

LH Diff Cover Stud

While the drive train is out I'm changing the output shaft seals and differential cover o-rings. There was a lot of accumulation from previous leaks...no real way to tell which is leaking (except that the back cover appears fine) so I'm chaning both shaft seals, both cover o-rings, and both CV shafts. I've seen several writeups but I'm wondering if I have to seperate the differential from the transmission (auto) or can the stud pictured above be removed to get the LH cover off? Not a lot of thread to double nut.

If the trans/diff have to be separated are the only bolts/fasteners the one's exposed? I will have the transmission pan off for cleaning and filter change but just asking in advance if there are any bolts that have to be accessed from inside the transmission.

'04 C5 base, automatic, 114,000 mi

BTW, when I took the RH cover plate off and looked inside, felt the fluid there was no discernible metal, debris, chips, or water.

Thanks,

I left the trans/diff together and removed the stud to get the left side cover off.

Thanks!

I actually ended up unbolting the differential from the trans and pulling it off. The drivetrain is out anyway so, gives me a chance to change the trans-to-differential shaft seal at 114k.

Good info for next time though.

I realize it's after the fact, but I used a stud remover. It's a socket with some eccentric pins on the inside that grip the stud.
