Thinking of changing my fluid in the rear of my '98. As I am seeing some track time, was thinking about replacing it with other than the stock fluid; are there others I should consider? Appreciate the help and thanks.
Joe
You really can't go wrong with any of the synthetics. Both Redline and Amsoil have the friction additive for the limited slip diff included. With Mobil 1 you will need to add some.
GM also makes a synthetic diff fluid, which is what the cars have been factory filled with for a couple of years. Seems to work great for me, and I get a free fluid change every year when the dealer has to re-re-seal my diff when it starts to leak again
One of the techs has reported that some cars will start to experience the grinding/snapping/popping noise in the rear end a few thousand miles after switching to any synthetic, whether or not the synthetic has friction modifier in it already or whether the GM modifier is used. If that happens, switching back to GM non-synthetic seems to solve the problem. This only happens on a few cars, and mine is not one of them :)
