Default '97 center console accessory removal question

Hi all,
I've searched for how-to removal instructions on this and only find different connections listed on this piece. Has anyone removed the center console accessory port that looked like mine??? If so, how do you remove it? I have tried unscrewing, pushing, pulling and it feels like there is a retaining something holding it.....but there are NO places to unhinge a retainer on this
Anybody got some helpful advice, please

???

I had the same issue as you back in the spring when I was putting ipod interface in. Not much help for you, but I just ended up cutting and splicing. Even when I had console out I messed around with it and was never able to get it un clamped. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-aux-plug.html

Yours look different. Mine is like this, and it's just a matter of pressing down the retainer while pulling.

Looking at your picture it seems yours has a retainer on the side of the plug towards the passenger seat.

That appears to be some sort of aftermarket "universal" replacement lighter socket. It's NOT the OE version.
That outer metal sleeve unscrews off the body. That is old school design that goes back decades.

I found a couple pics of the OE setup.

The black plastic piece is the panel retainer, and the socket insert gets pushed through it and latches with the small tabs on the sides. The electrical connector on the rear then just plugs in.

Note the small retaining tabs used on the black retainer piece and take care as they will break if you get to crazy with them. They snap into the small square holes on the metal socket insert when you slide it in

Mine has the same connector. I wonder if there were part shortages at some points, and they used these when the others were not available. OP looks like he has a 97', I have a 99' so that doesn't completely add up though. Maybe a dealer item early in production?

As I understand it, the OP is having difficulty trying to get the socket out. The connector isn't the problem as it just unplugs.

I think that's exactly what the one under the console door in my 2004 Z06 looks like and it's the original. The lighter next to the ash tray is a different animal that is held in place by a threaded piece on the back side.

That would be my guess too. Like i said, I had the same problem. I tried to pull until it felt like it was about to snap. Very frustrating. I'm not lying when I say I messed with it for a longer period of time than it took to do the whole Ipod Interface install.

Hi all.
I have a 1997 and have owned it since '98. I bought it from dealer and it was driven by G.M while at dealership, so I highly doubt that they modified it to an aftermarket connector. It is also not melted on there, as it moves a little and there is no signs of any melting. I have rarely to never used it......always use forward cig jack. There is NO release ear/collar/hole, etc anywhere on it, like others have. The metal sleeve does unscrew from front part that goes through plastic of center storage console. I'll report back if I get it off/break it/etc

Success!👍🏻
It just pulls off. The connectors were on pretty tight, but eventually just slid apart with leverage applied by small screwdriver!
Thanks for input, everyone!

sorry to chime in late, but I have a 97 as well. Mine was hard to pull off at first. I have been away for a while so good luck.... The rest of the removal is pretty simple.
