That's great. The Op is looking to buy a brand new one and add it to the car the way I did. That does not come with the harness for the switches, thus you have to make it. It's not the end of the world but it is something that needs done. The projector harness comes with the projector. The switch harness does not.

Correct.
For people like you, with the skills, desire, and knowledge to make a harness, this is not a major stumbling block, but to MOST people, the lack of ability to properly make their own is a game stopper.

No 11-pin harness = no HUD. Period. Too many people it seems don't seem to understand that.

Years ago, when I was making my HUD conversion, there was ONE forum member PACE THIS (Josh) who was making a few and selling them. I haven't seen or heard from Josh in years and doubt he is involved with this. The market for it is severely limited, and too many people **** and complain about a "wire" (as some call it) costing "so much" like they're getting "ripped off".

When I came across that harness (by itself) on Ebay the other day for $59, I was very surprised. I haven't seen one that cheap in years.

I had seen people say this a few times in the past and I thought I'd lookin to making them cause I've got all the tools, just don't have the connectors. So I looked on Newark and no, I didn't find the exact connector I needed but I did buy a couple alternatives.

Then I thought about what would I get for these things. Well, I could see the writing on the wall.

By the time I bought the connectors and pins, and made the harness, I'd have enough time and money in it that I'd probably get in a fistfight if someone balked at the price. I just figured life is too short for that and moved on. Honestly, at $59, that is a deal. You're not talking about automated equipment building these, it's some poor dude sitting at a workbench soldering, crimping and assembling. The parts are NOT cheap. I'm not buying 10M of em so no qty discounts here.

I couldn't find my pics of it. There's someone here on the forum who's got the pinouts and pics of the connectors. On mine, the colors are not perfect cause I used what I had. Two like harnesses gave their lives for my Hud.

59 is cheap and you explained why. one of my friends use to make harnesses for the obd2 hondas and would charge 100 for them. it was over $40 in parts and an hour of time to make one. add in free shipping, credit card fees and ebay's cut and he made about $30 an hour off those and sold maybe 20 a year

After looking at several Ebay auctions and individual parts I decided to buy a complete conversion from a Ebay parts vendor. So I will be getting the HUD in "great condition" (i'm hoping) the switch, the 11 pin cable and dash bezel for $289. free shipping. That's a fair price and I can actually put it in in a few days.

I'm looking forward to the project!
Thanks for all the posts and discussion. Ill post my completed project when I do it!!!

Before I looked into it I figured I could just make an 11 pin IDC connector, all I'd need was a ribbon cable and a crimper. But noooooo, GM can't do that, they played musical chairs with the wires and it's all a jumbled up mess. So you have to do em one at a time.

That's the best way to go about it if it does indeed come with that cable. It's such a small thing but it's a real pain to deal with if you don't have it. I'd say that between research and production, I had as much time in that cable as I had in installing the HUD. No exaggeration.

It's all fine and dandy except for one thing: No "wire" (as you call it).
Btw, a switch is not a major problem finding (either new or used) but the 11-pin cable is critical and very rarely available as a separate item at a reasonable price. No cable, no HUD, unless you make your own. Easier said than done.
YES that is the one I was talking about. IF YOU LOOK AT THE HUD YOU WILL SEE THE 11 PIN HARNESS ATTACHED !!! Sold for $154.80 plus $12 shipping. FOR EVERYTHING ! Now you have a spare cluster to sell .
To each his own.

Wrong! Sorry to burst your bubble, but that BLACK wire harness attached to the projector, (which does NOT have 11 wires) is NOT THE 11-PIN WIRE HARNESS THAT CONNECTS TO THE HUD DIMMER/MODE SWITCH!!!
That 8-PIN all black wire harness (which comes attached to ALL projectors btw), plugs into the very top rear of the cluster (IPC).
That item being sold (#201700444176) does NOT show the needed 11-pin "wire", nor does he mention it in the description.
IOW, it's NOT "EVERYTHING"!

Btw, the bidding ended on that Ebay item on 11/02 since the reserve was not met. The $154.xx was the highest bid. IOW, it did NOT sell. Read again...
To each his own.

I was gonna mention too that it shows the projector cable which can't be disconnected (without cutting) but not the switch cable. But, I was in bed and saw it on my phone and figured it'd take care of itself.

(edit)
Additionally, for that price used and still need to deal with the cable issue, I'd just go to Gene and get the brand new one that's nice and shiny.

For new projector and bezel, I agree. Still need to find the 11-pin harness though.
For used, Marc at Vettnuts sometimes has complete package deals including the 11-pin harness, plus he stands behind everything he sells as well. For used items he's one of the best vendors on CF.

OK guys , just to clear the air. All I ever try to do on this forum is help people out. Sometimes I guess it comes across wrong. So here is my piece offering.

If you want HUD , contact the above ebay seller. Yes the auction is over but he still has it.

I already talked to him. He has the complete system.

1) HUD projector
2) bezel
3)HUD enabled cluster
4) WAIT FOR IT ............................ Yes the "very elusive" 11 pin harness.

Everything you need to do a complete upgrade ! With the "harness".

He has 633 transactions, 100% positive feedback, and has been on ebay since 2001.

He told me his bottom dollar was $200 plus shipping for everything.

Yes you will have an extra cluster as a backup or to sell to recoup some money.

I understand this might not be the way everybody wants to go, but this is a killer deal.
Somebody should jump on this.

That being said, I hope I helped out a forum member and someone appreciates the hook up.

I suspect if he had actually shown that cable in the pics, and/or said it was there in the listing, it would have sold already. If the guy is willing to take 200 bucks and it actually works, then that's not a bad deal.

With my experience with people on fleabay, I'd want to see a picture of the cable and get it in writing that it is included in the deal before I signed on the dotted line. Ymmv.

If this seller DOES indeed include the harness (not shown) in his offering, that is definitely a good deal.

You may very well have done that here. It's one of the things I've been trying to accomplish since I joined this outfit back in 2001.

I agree, that's why doing your homework pays off. Ebay is adding thousands of new sellers everyday. Not all are well versed in how to advertise. Doesn't mean they are dishonest , but new to the game.

I'm a optimist and my cup is always half full. Made sense to me that if he has a complete HUD system but you don't see the harness, CONTACT HIM.

I'm currently running 243 heads off a CTS V caddy. Bought off Ebay for $325 . Why so cheap ? Seller advertised them as LS heads but offered no casting number. All the wise old timers blew right past them as gabarge. I contacted the seller and ask what casting. He was clueless on where to find the stamping or what he had. I explained and he sent back pics. Nice and clean with a clear 243 number. My machinist said they probably have less than 25k on them and are good to go. Now I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I see people asking $400-600 for 243s.

Hey, I'm all for getting a good deal. Nice score on the 243 heads.

Sorry to say, I'm not an optimist when it comes to fleabay. I've gotten lots and lots of great deals on there, but I start crowing about the deals after I see what I got and know it actually works. Till then, I'm a skeptic.

Currently, I have a PCM for a 97 sitting here. Now, I could put it on Ebay and yes, it 'works', but, the MAP sensor input is smoked. So, it scales that incoming value incorrectly and I have no way to fix it at the present. I'm not going to sell it, but, I did buy it... I even ran it for a month and f'ed around trying to tune around that little issue. Well, I'm out the money, such is life. But, as LoneStar says, Caveat emptor......

+1

No way would I buy used electronics off fleabay.

The OP already has a HUD-enabled cluster, so my advice would be to get a new HUD projector, bezel, and HUD switch from Gene at Cultrag and check with Marc at VetteNuts for the 11-wire harness.

Snap up that $59 wire harness on Ebay first, though. Marc wants $95.
