Default AC Compressor Locked Up

AC compressor has apparently locked up. Engine stalled while making turn into my driveway. Pushed it into garage and smelled the burnt up belt smell. Smoke coming from AC compressor pulley area. Couple questions.

1. Can I remove AC belt and drive? At least to repair facility.
2. Is replacing the compressor a DIY job or is it best left up to Mechanic?

Thanks.

You can remove the belt and drive it without issue.Repairing it can be done by yourself but the system needs to be flushed and the dryer and orifice tube replaced at the bare minimum,Who knows what kind of trash got sent through the system when the compressor failed.May want to have it repaired by someone with all the tools and equipment to do it right.Expensive but you shouldn't have any problems after the repairs.

You can just cut the belt with a knife to remove it. The only effect will be no cool ac.
Replacing the compressor on a C5 is not a diy job for a novice. Special tools and knowledge of the ac system is required.

Thanks for the knowledgeable replies. Went out this morning to check and low and behold it was working, however getting a grinding sort of sound and looks like some oily residue on the clutch? I'm guessing it overheated due to malfunction, Locked up and then after cooling it would spin again.

I went ahead and cut the belt. What's another $20 and the belt was probably 10 years old anyways. I'll look this week for a reputable shop down here in Florida to replace the unit.

Thanks again.
